hey, just out of interest, what is the number that comes up next to your name and why does it change? how can someone else share the same number as me? Are they necessary? Can you force people to log in before they post so as to make the conversation a bit easier to follow?

The number that comes up next to your name is your IP address. some people have static IP addresses (they always stay the same) and some have dynamic IP addresses (these change every time you logon). Your IP address is set by your local ISP.

The site is probably going to require everyone to login before they can post a message by the end of the month. We are also probably going to keep showing the IP addresses. This is to discourage people from signing up for multiple usernames and causing problems.
