Types of Hauntings..
Portal Hauntings:
Portals aren't really a new concept, as we've seen them in a lot of sci-fi flicks. But in the real world portal hauntings are considered controversial as there is little known and the idea is mostly theory or speculation. Portals are thought to be doorways to another world or dimension in which entities travel through. It's speculated that portals are not limited to one location, region or limited to sacred ground. Typically places that experience a wide array of different types of anomalous activity such as glowing balls of light, odd creatures, strange shapes, or unexplained mists or fog, are suspected to have a portal in which these energies are traveling back and forth. (i would guess these portals somewhat analogous to black holes in space-of time and dimension).
Demonic Hauntings:
There are many mixed views on this topic. The way we look at this type of haunting is that a true demonic presence can only be helped with the word of God (Christianity) and prayer. Evil is something we cannot overcome by simple human good will and teaching. Evil is at its root demonic and too great for us to overcome without God. Demonic haunts usually carry with them a slew of distinct activity like the smell of death or rotten flesh, if they speak the sound seems to come from everywhere, they are very powerful and may show it, they are there for one reason and one reason only, to brake the person down so they can be possessed. Demons hate us (mankind) because once they were angels (now fallen) and when God created man they saw that God loved us more. This started a war in heaven led by him who has many names (Satan). God banished them from heaven and the war over earth and the ones God revered most, Man. (The Exorcist and The Enity..]
Ghosts are "earthbound" spirits, stuck on this plain for whatever reason; many not even knowing they are physically dead. Some may want to stay, as they may feel "emotionally" attached to someplace, something or someone. While others only need direction or help moving on.
A Spirit is a soul that "has" reached the other side, and therefore can come back and forth freely. Spirits are not earthbound or stuck.
Physical Time as we know it on Earth is not the same as on the other side. What may seem like a decade or century to us, could be a blink of an eye to them. So when you think of it, it is acutally us "waiting" for them, not the other way around.

Shadow Hauntings: A sub-category of Demonic Hauntings
This is a type of haunting activity that has no real explanation and are different from ghosts. They are usually shapeless dark masses mostly seen with your peripheral vision. They are known to do things that are different from ghosts. They can move between walls, they have no human features, they wear no clothes. People who encounter them, have a feeling of dread. Clairvoyants that encounter Shadow People, say they do not feel they are human and consider them non-human.
Shadow People have no discernible mouth, noses or facial expressions. Some are seen as child sized dark humanoids. Some people say they seem to be made up of dark smoke or dark steam. At times when they move, they appear to be moving on an invisible track from one place to another, such as a toy train on a small scale railroad track. They have been seen to hop or what appears to be a strange dance. They are known to stare at the floor.
Two common types of Shadow People are the —hat man??, that looks like he or she is wearing a 1930s fedora hat and the —hooded figure??, which looks like the shadow person has a hood over their head. The hood and hat stand out as clothing, but otherwise, they are not wearing any clothing at all.
Doppelganger Haunting:
Extremely rare and a case example is best used to explain this. (Doppelganger means "double walker" in German)
Normally it will appear only to that person, while others around them are unable to see it, and tends to signify that something traumatic or tragic is about to happen to the person who sees him or herself.
Case example: German ghost hunting investigative team is called upon a doppelganger haunting activity to investigate.
The woman victim was standing on a street corner and with her peripheral vision saw the image of herself on a bus. The image of herself was staring back at her. One week later she again faced her doppelganger in a crowded mall, it stared at her and seemed to disappear amongst the mass of people. It wore the same clothes that she wore. One week later, she was diagnosed with cancer. --> continued ..

These types of haunts are very common. Think of it as a time in your life playing over and over forever. When you experience this type of haunt you will most likely hear footsteps or other noises that you cannot account for. From our experience most of the time, the spirits do NOT know you are even there. They just keep replaying the same experience over and over, like a tape-recorder. This is why when you renovate a home and activity starts to act up. Imagine you come home from work and your house is changed around and there is no explanation for it. This is how they feel. (here i think of that creepy, yet great film: The Others -Nicole Kidman)
Intelligent Hauntings:
Basically an intelligent haunt is where the spirits (are aware) that you are around and will try to contact you for various reasons. These types of spirits can be here for any reason. Afraid of judgement, died suddenly or tragically and are unaware they are dead, unfinished business, an injustice done, or they feel they need to let someone they knew in life, know one last thing. When they know you notice this, the activity will increase. And they may feed on your emotions (which are mostly fear, sorrow), as if they were like batteries to them. Once you understand why they are bound here you can figure out how to help them move onto where they belong. (here i think of the movie: White Noise -Michael Keaton) Loved this film!!
Poltergeist Haunting:
This is by far the most wrongly viewed Haunting of all. By definition poltergeist means "noisy ghost." Yes, this can be very serious and dangerous. The activity usually centers on children in their early teens and even more likely for teenage girls. The person usually does not know they are the root of the activity. Usually appearing after a traumatic instance or very strong feelings (mostly sorrow or anger). In more cases than you would think, the person has an over-developed brain function. The spirits use this extra power to move objects, turn lights on and off, appliances turning on and off, or even physical attacks. There have also been encounters where there is no person that the spirit feeds off of. In this instance there were many spirits (11) which feed off each other's energy. (Poltergeist III was pretty decent).
