Is emotional depth the ability to empathise as Dazed suggests? In the act of sharing in another's emotions, one cannot help but become entangled with them and thereby lose the neutality that is required for true depth. The very act of choosing a "side", whether consciously or not, necessarily reduces one's depth. Sometimes, for certain, but is this always true? Though your shadow may grow, your reach shrinks. Perhaps the greatest emotional depth is owned by s/he who has understanding without feeling.

Emotional depth is the understanding of emotions ==== Emotional Intelligence

to feel deeply or intensely doesn't constitute emotional depth, for everyone feels deeply about something .. every person has the capability to feel instense. But, that doesn't mean the person (understands) this deep feeling.

Look at just dxp ... nearly every person in here is experiencing deep emotions and they are confused as hell because they have no Emotional Intelligence, which a person needs to be able to understand how and why they feel at that depth.

I don't think one really can define emotional depth with words, when you feel it- it will be defined and inside you'll always remember the meaning. There are different faces of emotional depth, too many colors of it to recount. It takes many forms and exists in many places, but the trouble is in describing what it truly is.
Words are only sounds smacked together we use to try to describe things, but really everything is indescribable.

Intuition is really a highly tuned form of extreme logic. As an example, a highly intuited person will be able to assess very accurately all the *signs* someone is giving out and reason what they must be going through with eerie precision. So the intuitive person wholly understands what a person is feeling whereas an empathetic person wholly feels what a person is feeling.

Is reason involved in such a capacity to intuition? Intuition is often expressed as a gut feeling or emotional guiding with no reasoning to it. Very intriguing philosophical thought. Arises more questions.

To OP, I have no words for it. Come back to me in another decade or so. 😉

i get what your saying... so "emotional intelligence" should be swapped out for "emotional depth" and feeling deeply or intensely is a level of emotion whereas emotional intelligence(or depth) can fall at a range.

LOL!!!!!!

in the case of this thread... i do mean emotional intelligence. and i like the definitions here 🙂

as you said Dazed, I think empathy can be a very high level of emotional intelligence when another's feelings are understood in their perspective and not just felt as p-angel said.

I think Emotional Depth can be described. With some experience, an interest in the topic and emotional sensitivity, you can come a long way. As CreepyPants described: empathy and emotional intelligence are part of Emotional Depth, although I call the latter emotional reflection, because 'intelligence' is too broad a concept.
