For real... I watched a momma wood duck and her babies get run over, I pulled over and ran out to save who I could on a busy highway in rush hour. 3 were hit to my knowledge, momma's missing, 5 went to the bird rescue and I don't know how many more were left (est 2-4 more somewhere given the size of their clutch and the numbers we were chasing). Fish and Wildlife said they appeared to have hatched this morning or late yesterday. It was horrible, people blowing their horns at these babies and not even touching their brakes and just going over them. Multiple people did stop and assist, 2 state troopers also were chasing them around on the highway and then two fish and wildlife officers showed up (state pd called them in). But, it was horrendous watching. One that we lost almost made it, the car flew by and he tumbled, tried to get up as I ran to get him and another car went over him, he tumbled again, the third clipped him. I got him, but he was bleeding and bird rescue said he didn't make it. NO ONE EVEN SLOWED DOWN EVEN THOUGH I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD RUNNING ACROSS IT! People disgust me, had people just stopped to let momma and babies cross... what is 30 seconds out of your fucking day?

Had I not stopped no one probably would have, I would have given my life for those babies... so, yeah, saved 5 of a type of duck that has historically been seriously compromised (although numbers have flourished in recent years). Even one of the Fish and Wildlife officers went back 3 more times to see if she could find the mom or any additional babies (she did find one more and brought it to rescue as well). The bird rescue was ecstatic regarding the save as they don't get too many in, but they told me that it's a difficult bird to rehabilitate in the long run due to their stress levels (and especially so given the fact that they were just hatchlings).

good for you for stopping, and for caring!! Boo to those beepity beep beep beeps who didnt. I'm with you, I woulda been dodging bumpers too to save 'em, Ive stopped more than once to save a turtle or to shoo something across the road. Sorry though you had to experience the ugly side of people, during something that shoulve been a no brainer for everyone... Slow down, stop, or assist.
