Should I do this?

I am unhappy in my current full time job (for a variety of reasons). The money is good and it's the first time in my adult life I have full benefits, but my quality and enjoyment of life has gone down considerably.

I also work part time as a hostess in an upscale restaurant. The owner of the restaurant approached me a month or so ago about an Event Coordinator position that was opening up. We have not discussed specifics, but I know it would not pay near as much as I'm making now. Nor would it come with benefits. However it is in a field that I'm more interested in (food/wine). And if I took the job temporarily, I'd have more time to spend looking for another full time job in a field more suited to me.

So my question is - is it worth being temporarily worse off if hopefully the end result is being better off?

Did that even make sense?

How likely is it that you would find a job to support yourself in the end if you take the temporary one?

As a cap I looove security, but as long as I knew I would be able to support myself somehow, in the end, I would rather be happy in a temp job.
That's the thing.. I love security too :/

But I'm losing my damn mind at my current place of employment.

I just don't know! 😭

Is there a way for you to feel better in your current employment? When I have felt unhappy in a work place, I have thought about what tasks would make me happier there...while being useful for the company at the same time. There may be a win-win somewhere there? No?

I've asked for different responsibilities or to move to a different position within the company. I've had talks with my managers about my workload and amount of stress. Their response was pretty much "You'll get used to it" and then give me more of the same.

Please don't take this the wrong way...but welcome to Adulting. 😐

It's a constant struggle (at least here in the US) between security/material things and your health/sanity.

I'd say as long as you can meet all your financial obligations, go for what doesn't drive you crazy. I wish I had done that.
Yeah. I've had adult jobs before. I enjoyed them, but they didn't offer benefits or growth potential. I took this job because I turned 30 last year and thought I should be farther along in "adultness" than I was. It's no bueno though. 😢

Maybe there is a way for them to see that your way would be beneficial to the company? When money is involved, they usually listen.

You probably already did that and they are just stupid, but I thought I'd ask just in case.

Adulting is bullshit. And it seems like no one wants to change the status quo to make it suck less.

My current boss was going to school to change his career field because he hates the way our company was run. He graduates and gets offered a promotion within the company. Great! Now he can run things a better way that will make people want to stay! WRONG! Now he can be exactly the same as the people before him who made it a miserable place to work.

Do what makes you happy.

Having somewhere to live and food on the table makes me happy, so I strive for that...

Maybe that makes her happy too?

Okay? I didn't think I needed to specify that she shouldn't put herself in a situation where she'll be homeless and unable to cover basic care for herself.

Her problem was that taking the temp job would make her future more insecure. If it wasn't, it wouldn't even be an issue. As I understand it.

I read "less money". I didn't read "unable to cover my basic needs"

Anyway let's not derail the thread arguing semantics

Could be my cappiness to want to plan for the worst possible scenario, while hoping for the best. Seems we essentially agree with each other...me just instinctively wanting to plan for(or rather, against) the veeery worst. What can I say, I'm ruled by Saturn.🙂

The job may be temporary and pay less, but look at it as an investment in yourself and the potential long term benefits in terms of experience in the field, possible networking opportunities, ability to develop partnerships with vendors/suppliers etc if you use the opportunity to your benefit. Of course you don't want to put yourself in a bad position financially, but if it means you have to stretch your budget a tiny (and I do stress tiny) bit for this opportunity to get into the field you really want, do it.

Knock off that immature, impatient bullshit and hold out until you find a sure thing that's equally as stable.

Ditching it for something shittier is what starving pipe dream morons do, not responsible adults.

I held out at my last shitty job for various reasons. I hated the place and had a few potential job changes come my way, but they didn't pan out. The current place I work at popped up and it's 5784935 better and has moar monies. Same field, just better company. But I stayed put with shitty job until a better thing came along. I didn't start grasping at straws for the sake of escaping. That's what idiots do.

I'd like to think you're not an idiot.

Food industry is shit I hear.

Nasty, nasty world.

But, if you're unhappy...
It can be. It's not THAT terrible, but it can be. It really, really depends on who you work for.

Personally, I will never understand those who want to make it a professional career, but that's their thing so whatever. I'm in it because of the hours (fantastic for when I was in school and will come in handy when I go back) and it pays my bills. Moving into management has never appealed, despite 10 (*gag*) years experience in the industry. In and out with money in hand is all I care about. *shrugs*

Though with the current place I work at, I don't blame anyone for wanting to move into management. It's a major gold star on the resume, and if you make GM, you can make some serious, serious cash. Our gm makes almost, if not, 6 figures a year. It's crazy haha. When I told my brother that, he's like, "....shit I'm in the wrong industry!"

Unfortunately, that's not every company out there. A good chunk of them are run by clueless assholes with an MBA who never worked a day in a restaurant. The "average" is stores run by managers with barely a high school education who worked their way up, have piss poor training, zero skills in regard to dealing with employees, don't know half the labor laws, which is why so many end up in class action suits over something or the other, and the company is so cheap that they cut corners left and right, leaving the poor staff to suffer. Skeleton crews are why your service sucks at some places.

I couldn't even imagine working for small, hole in the wall places or smaller, local chains. I've heard some horrific stories from those places. At least with bigger corporations, they're so concerned about getting sued that many do their best to follow everything to a T (unless some moron manager fucks that up).

Big downfall is zero benefits. Very, very, very few offer benefits. Mine offered them with fewer required hours for "full time" status, but that went away last year. But that's okay. What some companies do offer is total shit, so you're better off finding your own plan anyway.
