If this was you and your family?

Winter Haven, FL -- In short, say Winter Haven police, 40-year-old Mitchell Large messed with the wrong house.

Three members of the Pena family- Luis, his wife and adult son- all armed themselves shortly before 7:00 Monday morning after awakening to the sound of someone on their back porch.

"It appears at least two of the family members fired in defense of themselves and their property," said Winter Haven police Chief Chief Hester.

Luis Pena, say detectives, first fired a warning shot above the back doors, but told detectives that Large just kept coming.

"Eventually he did enter the residence, and advanced toward the family members," said Hester.

Police and neighbors say something like this is extremely unusual for the neighborhood.

"It's very quiet, peaceful," said Almonte Ford who has has lived there for six years.

Ford and fianc? Breaunna Smith say as far as they're concerned, the Penas did the right thing.

"They let him know — 'hey this is a warning; we're in here. Don't come in here', and then he basically got what he deserved. I mean you can't just walk into people's house," said Smith.

Investigators say Mitchell Large, who appeared to be unarmed, has a criminal history of assault and domestic violence.

There appears, they say, to be no link between Large and the Pena family, making charges that much less likely.

"Whether he was armed or not armed, when he failed to retreat they certainly had a right, if it turns out to be this way, would have a right - to defend themselves" said Chief Hester.

I would scream like a girl. J/K. But if I had a gun then I would have done what they did. Police sometimes take their own sweet time to respond, like in the case of that woman who died during a 911 call & the police showed up 3 days later!! Like, really? 3 days later!? Were they in a a police cruise car or a cruise ship for it to take 3 days lol. Unbelievable. Anyway, no useless calls to the police, I'd shoot, hide or flee.

Frankly I'm not the least bit surprised the attempted invasion went down in a decent
residential area, where locals may not anticipate criminal presence & often take security for granted.

I agree. It's called a "false sense of security". Even if the homes are alarmed.
1.) Alarm goes off whether it is a break in from window or door
2.) Alarm company first calls homeowners, and tries calling each phone of numbers given
3.) Alarm company calls police.
4.) Police gets dispatched

All that money spent on an alarm system for all those^^ steps that take time. "false sense of security" Some people even think a "good" neighborhood is secure.

This just seems so out of place to me.

Why would an unarmed person not heed a shot fired at him?

A person would run .... something is wrong in the state of Denmark.

He has a history of domestic violence, not B&E

I'd be willing to bet he wasn't an intruder, until after he was killed ... then that became the alibi

Was he deaf and couldn't hear the shot? Did neighbors corroborate the story of warning shots? It does sound very strange that an unarmed person would do something like that unless they were drunk and high on a cocktail of amphetamines and hallucinogens.

At any rate, if someone were to attempt to force their way into my home and threaten my family... There remains would have to be retrieved with a spatula. On my own it might be a different story but God have mercy of their souls if my loved ones are nearby.

Was he under the influence of anything? Drugs might alter his perceptions and decisions.

You are one smart lady. 😉 Supposedly they already investigated that this guy had no relation to any of the family members.

I was taught the first time I learned how to use a gun..if I had to use it in self defense...

1.) Make sure the person is dead
2.) Make sure you can prove there was no way out

I'd be my house the warning shot was fired after he killed the guy coming through the door.
