how do you get a baby to stop biting-beating?

something i would like to know, because people seem to think that the best way to teach a baby to stop hitting, is to hit them.

and honestly ican think of no other way.

it's a baby. you do not hit it. morons.
don't react to it, may take a few days, the novelty will wear off. that baby is getting reaction so it keeps doing it. same with biting. you say firm no, remove the baby from your lap. remove yourself and ignore the behaviour., it will learn super fast. I had a nasty biter/hitter. she is a gentle soul now.

I disagree, but it does depend on the age. As for a toddler, biting back worked for me (my daughter never bit again) - my mother said it worked with my siblings and I too.

No, do not hit the child back. Be firm, look straight into the child's eyes and say NO when the child displays that behaviour. When the child does something worth praising, do so. They will eventually learn with your reaction to stuff if it's good or bad. No need for extreme measures.
