This letter is being written because if there's anything I detest more in human beings it's open hypocrisy. Or more accurately because girl on girl internet action ain't the way it used to be.
Anyway before this ramble without a cause begins, A FEW FACTS. One, I'm not homophobic. Two, I've been a staunch supporter of gay rights since I was a wee lad in my parents liberal commune. And three, the usual cliche'd Sarah Palin-like response of "I have many gay friends!"
Getting back on point, it came to my attention a few weeks ago that you want the media to focus on your music not the sexuality.
And that is totally fine. Except for a few things.
If you dont want people focusing on your sexuality, then why:
1.) Do you have a media image that is flamboyantly gay?
2.) Make music that is clearly targeted for play at Gay clubs?
3. Do a renactment of the 90's movie Threesome with your dancers on stage?
There are plenty of openly gay musicians where the media doesnt make their sexuality a focus. Morrissey, Rufus Wainwright, Tegan and Sara, Ani DiFranco, etc. Want to know why the media doesnt make their sexuality a big deal?
The subject matter in their music is ambiguous, cause it appeals to EVERYONE. And they dont play marco polo with male dancers on an televised awards show.
There's nothing wrong with using your sexuality ala Britney Spears to sell records. Just quit be HONEST about it.
Otherwise with the way things are going, I will fully expect to see you opening for Loverboy in a Missouri dinner theatre next year.
