once you break up with someone after being together for few years do you ever stay in touch or attempt to contact that person or its out of sight out of mind wit you?

we've been together for 5 years, it ended peacefully but emotionally....it was her who wanted to leave....she grew apart from me because i wasn't always there since my job requires me to be gone10-14 days at a time
its been 8 months and we haven talked once since than, it makes me very sad
only contact she ever made was a txt msg for my 30th bday back in apr and that was it
she was more than just a girlfriend, she was my best friend and soul mate ( so i thought at the time) and makes me sad that she just threw me out of here life like that and has no desire to contact me
I've never mistreated her in any way and she broke my heart twice
she never really gave me a closure and im having hard time moving on
