I should probably have said that the cap with sag venus is me (a woman) and he's the leo with a virgo venus. I've known this guy for 20+ years, but I still can't figure out how to merge our love planets.
His is in scorpio and mine is in pisces(very influenced by my sun).

The fact that you’re a cap is good, it’s going to require some earthy patience from you. He is going to approach the relationship very cautiously and slowly. He might even try to talk himself out of it, Virgo Venus overthinks everything whereas sag energy wants to act on impulse and jump right in. Whatever you do, just don’t pressure him.. I have a cap sun/sag Venus guy friend and his Venus is conjunct my mars… he pressures me a little bit to “relax” and go with the flow which just makes me even more apprehensive.
It’s good that you guys have known each other for years and have that foundation as friends. I’ve always said my future husband will likely be someone I am friends with first because it’s important for me to build trust and respect with someone first and foremost before building a relationship.
His Virgo Venus will be of service and once committed, he won’t shy away from putting in work for you and the relationship. I was with a Capricorn for over 10 years, it also helps that your sag Venus goes along with his fire sun. The biggest thing is, you just might have to pace yourself with his slow moving analytical Venus.

It's even worse than that. This guy and I have even been together off and on - we even lived together for quite some time. We know each other very well and when we don't physically see each other, we talk on the phone every day. And I still can't figure this out.
Since we already have this history: if we got together again, that's it. If we would break up again, then the door is locked and bolted forever, so we need to figure this out beforehand if something's gonna happen between us again.
He definitely shows love through acts of service, but I'm a cap with "I can handle it myself"- energies all over my chart, so I don't really need that. However, I do see the intention behind it, so I do really appreciate the effort, and he knows this.
Just like you say, my sag venus just jumps in on impulse...which scares the poor guy, so he withdraws. I really try not to, but it's so hard. It's even a fire singelton, so I am very, very bad at it. I am still a restrictive capricorn, so I can keep it together most of the time, but sometimes I just can't when it comes to him. On top of this, his leo sun recents himself for being scared of my "attacks".
My love language is touch and quality time, much in a sag way. I want to experience things with him and would like him to initiate something sometimes, but he's pretty bad at that...which makes me feel unloved even though I know, logically, that I'm not.
So, what we need is to somehow find common ground - some compromise that let us both feel good in a potential future relationship. But what?!? Everything else works (after some work) and I should probably say that sex was never a problem, including him initiating. We were even FWB for long periods of time between relationships, but we're not now, because we don't think it would be healthy. Too much feeling involved.
So how do we find this common ground? I have really tried to tone my sag tendencied down and I'm not sure how much more I can do in that department, but I love him to bits, so I would really like to make this work.

I have the reverse situation in him Virgo Sun with Leo Venus and I am Sag both Sun and Venus. Honestly - it worked this long cause we both have fire Venus and water Mars...and despite that Virgo and Sag are squared, our Suns form trine instead, based on degree. I don't think it would be working very well if it wasn't this way with Venus and Mars signs. His Mars and Venus ate in better harmony than yours are, to say so. But at least you have both Mars signs complimenting each other so that's something too.

Our suns actually do actually form a trine according to degree, although they are inconjunct according to sign. That situation, is one I think we have worked through pretty well over the years,
Our moons square each other in both sign and degree, but I think we have managed to negotiate that situation as well, I think.
Our marses are fine, but our venuses square eachother according to sign and according to degree, there's no aspect at all.
As you can see, we are an astrological disaster. 😄
Although, I am a plutonian and saturnian capricorn who expect to have to work for everything. I think all trines between us would bore me, tbh. And we do have loads of pluto aspects between us, so it seems like we are stuck with eachother anyway, so...🙂

So when you talk about your sag venus “attacks” what do those typically look like? Do you just say or do impulsive things like start arguments?
My cap ex didn’t have sag venus but he did have sag rising and my sag mars was conjunct his rising. He is quite the love bomber and has history of being inconsistent and flaky which was one of my biggest frustrations with him (aside from the infidelity) but I also meant to mention Virgo Venus builds trust through consistency. So while you’re working on the other kinks, I would just try to be reliable to him if you’re not already. When you say you guys are off and on, who is the one that’s typically breaking things off?
Have you expressed what it is that you would like more from him that he isn’t providing?
It’s also a possibility that it’s NOT meant to work out for the long term. It’s great that the sex is not a problem area but if that’s the only thing the two of you have been able to get right after trying so many times already, it might just be time to throw in the towel for good. There’s chemistry and then there is compatibility, and sometimes we won’t find both in the same person.

No, my "attacks" are not like that at all; I use the word loosely. That's just my venus that can't help but to touch him and his leo sun wants to be the initiator, but his virgo venus crumbles and doesn't, and when I initiate, his venus feels attacked. It's not an actual attack, but it may feel like it to him. I'm pragrammed to never ever say impulsive things or start arguments (let's just say that that was not a good idea in my family, growing up.) I do bring up discussions, but when I do, I tend to be constructive(cap merc). (which he would agree to)
He broke up with me the first time just after three months because we had both come out from long relationships when we got together and he wasn't sure if we were both ready(him mostly). His breakup with his ex was much tougher than mine was (I intiated my breakup - I had just realised that we were not compatible and if my sag venus is good at one thing, it's getting over breakups once I made the decision to leave(I also have a pluto square to it, so that helped too) and we left as friends and are still in friendly contact to this day). His breakup was not initiated by him, although there was never any bad blood between them, it was still tough for him. I know, because I saw him every day at school.
The next two breakups were pretty much joint decisions. So much happened to both of us individually and we were both idiots for communicating really badly...somehow feeling that the other person should be able to intuit what the other person was feeling, which we had been pretty good at before, but at those times, we had reached levels that could not be intuited, but needed sit down discussions...which he wouldn't have been able to handle at those times, as he was pretty darn defensive and I intitiated very few of those discussions, as he clearly showed that he wasn't interested in that the times I tried. I pretty much walked on egg-shells around him at that time. He has admitted to me that he never had a reason not to trust me, except for me being flirty(which I was shocked to hear, since I never saw myself as flirty. Sag venus again?), but he still didn't feel like he could (he couldn't trust anyone, though, so it was not just me. Think unevolved scorpio mars).

Now, we've been through even more crap. What happened could easily have broken us, but instead it made us stronger. So we have now proven ourselves to eachother time and time again and have had the necessary sit down discussions. That broke the barrier. We trust eachother. We communicate. We have both grown so much and together. We always laughed a lot together and we can be quiet around eachother as well as finding topics to discuss that I think are beneficial to us both. We just go so very well together, except for this venus issue. Sure, some relationships just don't work, but is this really one of them? I would hope it's not.
Being so darn good at communication as I claim we are nowadays, you'd think we have had this discussion, but this is actually thee topic we dance around. It's like it's too important, so (I'm embarrassed to say) I think we are trying to send eachother signals so that the other person can intuit how we feel. So yes, when it comes to this particular discussion, we have gone back to our old ways. Now, one more thing has happened to me and my plan is to initiate this conversation with him once that's over. But when I do I have to be ready. Ooo, the wall of text. Sorry. I understand if you don't feel like reading it all.

People often say challenging aspects are better than harmonious ones. That's simply truth because with challenges you have stronger feelings involved too. People fight more to work on things and that shows more dedication. Like you said, if it was all trines it would probably be boring. I've always seen more people with incompatible signs in strong relationships than those with compatible onesclick to expand
Yes, but you do need to actually put in the work and I see a lot of people who just expect things to work smoothly and if there is a bump in the road, whatever it may be, they just claim incompatibility and move on to the next.
Of course, you have to look out for red flags, but I do think some people might want to open their minds a little bit sometimes. But I don't know. Maybe it's me who should stop working on impossible(?!?) relationships? 🙂
