Jesus...I'm glad you're okay. Take it easy, mama--sorry it's such a bumpy period for you 😢

Lol, shit happens. My life is a bumpy period in general. I just figured I should say something because I hadn't been around in a few days, and it's not like it DIDN'T happen, lol.

What happened was that my roommate/best friend and I were leaving (just note, I live in the northern virginia/DC area, so traffic is always fun) to go to my house in Southern Virginia; note, it was Friday around 1pm and Columbus Day weekend. So, we haven't even left NOVA (northern virginia) yet and we were stuck in stop-and-go traffic. While driving, I noticed some cars driving over a dirt patch to get over the median and on to a different part of the road. I was distracted for that single moment and didn't realize the car in front of me had just stopped. So, I was slowing down (not fast enough though) and eventually tapped the back of the car in front of me. That wasn't what caused the accident. About five seconds later, we were slammed from behind (fairly hard) by the car behind us. Just to make note, my roommate has a fused neck/spine with a titanium rod due to a surgery she had a couple of years ago, so with the impact, she started freaking out because she felt shocks going up and down her arms. With the other three cars involved, we all tried to get over to the other side of the road, through the traffic. The other cars wouldn't let us pass though, so that took about 5 minutes. By the time we were over, my roommate was crying (she never cries unless in a lot of pain) and she kept telling me that she thought she needed to go to the hospital. So, I ended up calling 911 to get an ambulance, all the while, the guy who I hit kept interrupting me to ask about what happened; he was a bit of a jackass, and he left the scene like 10 min later probably because his car wasn't that banged up. So, to speed this up, my roommate was taken away in an ambulance and while waiting to go with the ambulance, I figure my anxiety and lack of food was forcing my blood sugar down, so I was close to passing out. 5 hours later in the E.R., my roommate turns out to be alright except she may have herniated her 6th vertebrae further (either that or nerve damage), and I was just really sore for the last couple of days.. My roommate's mother kept telling me that if I wanted, I could go on ahead and leave, but I

Aw man! Yeah, I know someone with issues similar to that of your roomate (who ironically got them as a result of a car crash as well) who then got into another accident, and it set off a whole chain of reoccuring pains. What a nightmare!

I repeat tho that I'm glad you're okay--it could have been so much worse, and I can see where the car you bumped into would speed the hell away (he probably thought it was somehow his fault, and with your friend crying, he probably thought it'd be more trouble then it was worth to stick around, and fight anything--especially w/the law involved).

You were awesome to stay w/your roomate, I'm sure she more than appreciates that.

Damn...sorry you had to go through that.

Yeah, my roommate has a connective tissue disorder (among other things) and was really sick until she had her surgery.
And the guy that drove away, it wasn't his fault that the accident happened. I was the one who hit him (albeit, not hard -- just enough to bend my license plate), and the car hitting us from the back caused him to hit a woman in front of him. He was a New Yorker, and for some reason he was in a hurry to leave. I don't know where he had to go, but it wasn't in his best interests to leave the scene of the accident.

Before the day was over, I just felt a large amount of guilt, only because I'm pretty protective of my roommate. She may be a normal girl and rather strong, but she can still be fragile due to her condition, so subconsciously, I always feel myself watching over her. So when it happened, I just kept thinking that if I hadn't gotten distracted or if I had just stopped to get her some food like I said, it could have been avoided and she wouldn't have to suffer. But, I had to remind myself that I don't know what could have happened had I actually not hit the car in front of me. Either way, I do not blame the car that hit us; the girl was actually very sweet and a young college student like me; the front of her call actually got pretty messed up after hitting mine, and she was just so sorry for what happened. I remember just looking at her and hugging her, and told her that it wasn't her fault. I mean, it definitely could have been a lot worse, and while I hate to think of it this way, the accident happened in a really convenient place because there was a hospital only 15 mins away.

Since then, I find myself watching

Honestly? You're lucky he sped away. THAT was the big one, in terms of the one that coulda sued you big time in that whole scenario, because YOU hit HIM. The person that hit YOU, not so much...the woman in FRONT of him would only be able to attack HIM, legally (from what I was told years ago).

The guilt is understandable, but I'm sure she knew you didn't mean for any of that to happen. Stop beating yourself up, we get distracted on the road all the time. I can't tell you how many times I've been fiddling with CDs, or closing my eyes while singing, and realized I was veering into the other lane. You scold yourself, and resolve to do better. Sh*t happens, even when you're being careful. You've got angels watching over you, no one was seriously harmed, just be more careful next time.
