Oh, take me back,
Won't you please?
Back to the time when
My hair fell down to my knees.
Back when life was slower.
The time when chemises were worn,
Stockings were held up with ribbon.
Corsets tightened,
Boots buttoned up.
Spinning ever in reverse,
To attar of roses in my bath,
Lavender sprigs in my drawer,
Furniture rubbed with beeswax
And smell of lemon and fresh cut flowers..
In the air.
The girl idly brushing my long, long hair
Before she braided it into
A complicated mass on the back of my head.
Holding up the mirror so I could,
View the way the sunlight shone off the mass
Of raven black.
Rubbing cream into my hands,
My throat,
My face.
Glass stopper of scent applied,
The rustle of petticoats,
Smooth glide of silk.
Chatelaine at my waist.
To glide down the stairs,
Hand running over polished wood,
Eyes wide and clear.
Sighing in pleasure at the beauty all around me.
Crossing the floor to open the double doors.
Hear the scurry of servants,
The rustling above in the Nursery.
The rush of children wrapping their hands around me tight.
Their dear faces tipped up for morning kisses,
And an affectionate swat to get to the breakfast table.
Husband waiting, eyes aglow over his paper.
Mine smiling back as I stroke arm, shoulder,
And place a kiss full upon eager lips.
Oh take me back,
Will you please?
To country home and pleasures.
When the world made sense,
And life was full.
