I was with a guy for years that has Venus in Cancer ..... he loved my nurturing side but not so much my fire

If you follow traditional astrology then you'd look at Mars or Venus according to sex or gender. I don't completely agree with that.

I believe it's Venus and Mars but also a combination of other placements too. One placement never tells the full story.

Moon, Mercury, the 5th, 7th & 8th houses, Eros and Lilith.

I agree. On top of multiple placements, we also all have masculine/feminine energy flowing through us to mix things up further. I think all of us will find appealing qualities in a partner from the traits of both your Mars and Venus placements. You're also going to find qualities you desire in a partner from your ascendant, and you will likely have a magnetic pull towards the sign opposite of your ascendant. There really is so much at play here.

If anyone wants to use astrology to determine compatibility with someone, it'd be a really good idea to learn how to read and interpret an entire chart. Sun placements and horoscopes isn't going to get the job done.
