Is he trying to tell me something??

Got a weird text from my cap "friend" (we've never given ourselves official boyfriend/girlfriend titles). We were just texting usual stuff and then I texted:

"received something in the mail today for someone I know who's having a birthday soon"

him, "your brother!"

me, "no, a friend who is a boy"

him, "make that boy deserve it...not sure he does"

WTH does he mean by that? He's uncomfortable with gift giving, but I gave him a gift last year for his b-day and one for xmas; there in the same week. He gave me a xmas gift too. We've dated for over a year now, but only see each other about 3 times a month. He's made no effort to make it any more (in the beginning he did), which is fine with me for now. He has mentioned before he knows he doesn't give enough of himself. Neither of us is willing to do more b/c of our busy/weird circumstances (I've posted on this before). I would just forget the whole relationship, but of course, I really like him, so I'm choosing to stay in limbo.

I'll ask him next time I see him, but just wondering what others thought. Is he trying to tell me to challenge him or he thinks he doesn't give me what I want, so I should ditch him—? Oh, and he obviously knew I was talking about him; I was just being silly on how I brought it up.
