The —Great Pacific Garbage Patch—?_ ever heard of it ? This is the man who discovered it in 1997:

Solar panels??_ another good idea, right ? What are they made of ? Plastic??_ still with only 10% efficiency??_ and none guaranteed to last more than 30 years. AND??_ if they are not part of a network??_ there will be a big rechargeable plastic battery somewhere in the midst here too??_ again??_ it all has to go somewhere. What are the chances these batteries were actually made of recycled plastic ? Probably close to zero??_ there is no money in recycling plastic??_ and since there are so many types??_ it is not practical either.

Everything degrades over time. Does anyone here remember glass ? Glass is just sand??_ can't be much more ecologically sound than that. Wood is actually biodegradable??_ and metals oxidize. These things are truly recyclable??_ they can be used again, they can be used as something else, and any waste will go away, with or without our intervention.

Plastic ? Everyone has seen what happens to it. Those plastic playground toys losing their color??_ then cracking??_ and then breaking ? The vinyl (plastic) dashboard and/or the seats of a car ? Plastic is ultraviolet sensitive??_ meaning exposure to ultraviolet will break its bonds??_ becoming smaller pieces of plastic. Plastic becomes brittle over time??_ and its usefulness is rather short-lived. Disposable this-and-that's following us wherever we go??_ packaging, toiletries, microfiber, acrylic, and polyester ! Technological companies are profiting too??_ how many mobile phones do we buy ? Computers ? Big-screen TVs ? Other electronics with a perceived expiration date ? The plastic market is a pandemic !

The process of actually making plastic disappear environmentally is roughly 500 years. Still another use for plastic is always being discovered ! THIS is NOT —SUSTAINABLE??.

I have heard of the plastic garbage heap.
This is an issue that you know exists but it doesn't fully register until someone shows it to you in it's entirely.

How about stopping the production of plastic altogether?
I think that would make recycling a lot more effective.

You are right... but who can stop the powers that be.

Plastic DOES have its uses... in hospitals for example... without it there, we would almost be going back to the dark ages. What else could replace the plastic tubing used for transfusions and such ? Today... we find plastic on everything made to be disposable... it is NOT disposable.

Considering the documentary claims it takes 500 years for plastic to disappear, it's not going anywhere soon. LOL
So IF it's safe to do so, and if they are not already doing so, they could recycle plastic for medical purposes.

We consumers will have to want to adopt a more healthy alternative. We demand a solution.

It may be possible within time to actually put in on a ballot for a vote.
However, politicians may say it's expensive and how they would need to raise taxes and charge high recycle fees.

I like that idea... recycling plastics for hospitals. There is plenty leftover at the moment !
Meanwhile... they give tax breaks to corporations that build solar panels and electric cars. They should be responsible for the lifecycle of their own shit ! Taxing us for the disposal isn't fair !

David I think you just found your non-profit. 😉.

I'm not sure how it's done in France; I'm assuming you are there it's posted in your avatar, but where I am we are charged to dispose of our trash. Corporations who produce plastic products should be charged for disposing of them.

I will give my left pinky finger if politicians don't try to tax citizens for reducing the production of plastic products. Once again consumers actually control the flow of products. If we refused to purchase plastic wares that would significantly reduce the production of plastic products. Buying ceramics, glass, wood, etc.

Do you know if there is enough plastic to actually stop producing plastic and use the currently disposed of plastic?

Personally... I think there is plenty already !

Where I am at, recyclables are separated before disposal. Plastic is at least 50% of what I throw away... ALL that DAMNED PACKAGING ! I have no idea where it really goes after that. The little 'recycle' symbol that companies put on their products is usually just a reminder for US... it doesn't mean that THEY THEMSELVES used recycled materials... THIS is not THEIR concern... it is cheaper for them by far to use new materials instead.
And yes... I am in France 😉

Hi David, this thread reminds me that I have some computers to dispose of.
I will be sending them to a recyclable electronics company. 🙂

I hear France is a beautiful country but you guys pay 75% tax!? WOW, is that correct? 😢
Where is all that tax money going?
