Ok so my son, who will be 4 next Wed, is terrified of the dentist. I mean he kicks into fight or flight mode. I think it is because the first time he went was a month after he went to the ER and had a Lego removed from his nose after he so charmingly shoved it up there. But the first thing he said when he walked in was "not my nose." This was months ago, but when I mentioned he was going again yesterday he freaked. They haven't even touched his teeth yet he wont even let them look. I cancelled his appointment today because of how anxious he was this morning and I will be finding a pediatric dentist for him, but what are somethings you have done to ease dentist anxiety in children?

The whole thing is so emotionally draining because he can't even explain what about it scares him which is something he normally can do.

Talk to him about sugar bugs and let him see what sugarbug infested mouths look like. Aka yellow cavity yuckness.

Show him youtube cartoons and real life kids going to the dentist. The dentist makes your mouth squeeky clean. Read books about the dentist to him.

They give you free fun stuff!

Bribe him with somewhere fun before and after. His favorite treat.

I have tried all of that. He is so stubborn he is so afraid he even turned down putting up our Christmas tree early. I will keep trying though. I might buy one of those at home dental kits to see if he will work on my teeth or his.

Try playing pretend with him. My daughter when she was 3 would be afraid of the dentist until I got her one of them dolls that had a Dr set. Me and sometimes my son who was 3 years older then her would play with her. Took her to the Dr's or Dentists few more times, let her bring her doll with her. She finally learn to not to be so afraid anymore as she got older.

I like this idea he needs something tangible as a representation of safety.
