How to upload gifs as avatar?

Tried to upload a gif to use as my avatar.....internal error all 7 times. Now gif is smaller than 1mb, uploaded it to Tinypic to convert to animated jpg in case "gif" extension isn't allowed.....nothing happens.

resize it to 100x100 pixels

Actually I edited the hell out of it, down to around 500kb and it worked this time. Thx anyway
