Good God-- what part of "for my own reference" implies snitching?
You must have a guilty conscience. 😈
Why would you keep it as a reference if you don't plan to use it against the person you're documenting? #piscesmoonproblems
And nope, no guilt. Why, what have you heard?click to expand

"B. How exactly can the truth be used against someone, if their intent is good?"
Was that ^^^^ supposed to be confusing on purpose?
Truth does hurt! Your intentions might be good for you but bad for the person you use the information against.
You saying that you're "covering your ass" implies that you fear something will happen in the near future if you don't have the document at hand.
So how exactly are you using it for yourself then if it's not in anticipation of war?

I think when it gets to the point in a job or any workplace that you have to constantly cover your ass and keep notes in a diary it's time to leave. I've been there, constantly watching my back for the daggers, checking and re-checking my work, making notes, signing everything.. It's not enjoyable and it's not the environment i wish to work in.. EVER... Life is stressful enough as it is. Why must we put ourselves through this in order to "earn our living"—

In the land of corporate America, unless you're working in a monastery, there are people who will not hesitate to throw you under the bus to save their ass/job. People are fucking sue-happy in the land of the free. If your employer happens to get in trouble, there will be a paper trail. If you dotted your "I"s and crossed you "T"s, and shit still fell through the cracks, you have documentation that you needed to do what you are supposed to. You are not necessarily waging war against colleagues, you just have proof that you did your job. No one is pointing fingers, you're just making sure that the paper trail doesn't end with you...
I am a big fan of e-mails. Even when things are discussed verbally, I will still send one out to clarify details.

I didn't understand some of what you wrote up there. It's getting late and you're right, documenting is the way to go.

aka CYA 🙂
Whenever something happens at work that is questionable or may come back to bite me in the ass--
whether it involves management, a co-worker or a client-- I document it.
Especially if I don't agree with how it was handled.
I usually do it on the same day it happens while it's still clear in my mind, and keep it for my own
reference (and for cya... just in case).
I've always done this.
Anyone else do it?
Has it ever been useful?
