there was this guy i saw in the municipal hall. i know him since i've seen him at the gym. i was going to say hi to him. but he was such a snob so he didn't even smile at me.
one day, i saw him at the gym again, and tried to talk to him.
"hey, i saw you at the municipal hall. are you a board member (a board member is a politician)?"
he said, "no."
i didn't believe him so i said, "really?"
"i'm just a helper of the mayor."
he was wearing an office barong so it's really unbelievable that he was just a mere helper.
so i said, "you are a board member."
he cut that off by asking, "so what do you do?"
"i am a consultant of the mayor and, because i'm a cpa lawyer by profession, I review the tax ordinances."
"really? so can you tell me what ordinances have you reviewed?"
"no i couldn't tell. it's confidential."
"come on, i won't tell others."
i was like, okay since this will eventually come out anyway and i don't think it's strictly confidential, i told him.
so he asked, "how do you find the ordinances?"
i answered, "well, board members are not well-versed in legal matters so they committed a lot of mistakes and errors."
a couple of weeks later...
my boss came to me and told me, "you better keep quiet and not brag. you've offended somebody"
it turns out that the guy who talked to me was indeed a BOARD MEMBER. and to make matters worse, he went to law school. but i checked the rolls of attorneys, his name isn't included so he's certainly not a lawyer. no wonder, he was offended. to make matters worse, he's the son of a senator-lawyer and his grandmother was the first female bar topnotcher.
i thought to myself:
1. he lied about his position after i insisted that he must be a board member.
2. he insisted that i divulge some things i already told him as confidential.
3. he was very privileged that i told him these information.
4. then he backstabbed me with my boss.
5. he exaggerated the anecdote by saying that four other board members heard about it. - this is a complete lie because we had that conversation at the gym; it'd be very coincidental that four other board members work out at the same gym at the very same time!
6. i am taking my job very seriously. my boss has nothing but high praises at my work output. i may not be very diligent but i am efficient and i write well - which is very important for my job.
as a result of the incident, my boss decided that it will be him who will hold the seminar-meeting with the board members. the initial plan was, because my boss was delighted with my work, that i will be the one to hold the seminar. but because one of the board members was slighted, he will be the one to present the edited ordinance. it's fine with me; it's just that he's not expert in tax laws. i wonder how he'll navigate through that meeting when all the materials were prepared by myself.
questions:
1. what will i do to gain the trust and respect of that board member?
2. what will i do so that it will still be me who will present the revised ordinance?
3. are the above scenarios still possible?
