I was playing a videogame, minding my own business, just standing there (the character I was playing at the moment was black) in some corner, checking my inventory, and there it was. Some idiot sent me that message.

Look, I know there are ignorant people out there, but are we really still doing this? What the hell is wrong with people? I guess I was extra shocked due to the fact that I'm caucasian irl and it was my first time having had racial slurs thrown my way. I'm not pissed because it was thrown at me, though, (...or rather, at my character) - I'm pissed because it was thrown at all at anyone, and I'm just so disappointed with people in this bloody world. End rant.

Sounds like you was on Xbox live they have the most racist players. If only more black people knew that word had no meaning it’s literally a made up word so I no longer allow that word to bother me, now that doesn’t mean that if you say it I won’t think you’re a racist asshole but you will not get a reaction out of me. racists say that word cause they want it to hurt you. so other black people should stop letting it if they stopped being hurt by it they would stop using it.

PS, actually.

That's the problem, as I see it - they say it in order to hurt the other person. And is it because this other person has behaved in a sh*tty way towards them? No, it's because of the color of their skin. Wtf! It just makes absolutely no sense.

I'm happy you're not bothered by it! Has it been thrown at your person a lot?

In America everyone says it.

I told a guy "shut up n*gger" because he gave me crap for smoking a cigarette. He was jacked and white and bicycling.

It's like British "wanker" I suppose. I got called "wanker" once and deserved it so who knows.

Really? I can understand that some people are trying to take the word back in order to make it sound more positive, but the word is so loaded (...or so I thought). Saying that to a white guy takes the edge off it some, at least in my ears. I mean, if I (white) was going to the US and called a black guy 'f*cking n*gger', I'm guessing we wouldn't end up best buddies.

It can be offensive if you use it unprovoked, like any insult I guess...not that I'm an authority, just common sense.

I wouldn't even call a black guy "n*gger" probably, since it's so stereotyped that I would probably look bad. Whatever insult works I guess.

Exactly. I would have thought it offensive even provoked, though.

Wow im shocked someone said it on PS people are usually chill on there but I’ve had a couple experiences on games where they were being racially ignorant but never said the N word the worst players that do that are the ones on WOW they hurl that thing around like it’s a frisby the key to people like that is to attack their intelligence or troll them don’t let it get to you. The non black people who say that word be the most cowardly in person I wouldn’t care too much about it.

I have too many layers to the topic. Parts of me hate the idea other races have this red button word they can just press and instantly manipulate another race. Its like a weird sick type of control, and in ways I wish people could be a bit less sensitive and just shrug it off. Then the word would lose it's control. At the same time I'm white, and will never truly understand in the same way. Morally I will say when used in a hateful or angry way its truly degrading, which to me will always be wrong and unnecessary. All you can do its try not to hurt by it and think about how they are just fucked up and eventually will get theirs. Those type of people would likely never say a slur to someone's actual face, so they are just weak minded and truly not worth your time or emotions.

Yes, agreed, I've actually never seen it written on there before. I used to play WOW back in the days, but I didn't see it much there either...although I did see it. You mean it's that bad? Have you played for long or just lately? Because I haven't logged in more than maybe twice a year for years and years, so I barely know what happens there nowadays.

You don't even have to attack people who are that ignorant and even plays at it hidden behind anynomity - I find they aren't usually very difficult to be made look stupid. Just let them hang themselves. But that requires some kind of diaglogue, though, so it depends on how it comes up. Hmm, this makes me sound like an a**hole, doesn't it? *blushes*

I remember the quick evolution of headset banter.

Back in late 90s early 2000s you had actual game lobbies with dozens of people playing multiplayer on LAN anyone hardly said a word.

I would never get that emotional over a video game tho, that's the worrying part. Seems like mental masturbation.

Things have changed, for sure. The only times I got emotional while playing multiplayer was if I made a mistake that was quite unnessessary, but I promise you didn't have to hear me shout things like that.

Absolutely. We are both white, so it's probably difficult for us to put ourselves in the position of someone who isn't. We don't have to go on a job interview or a date or whatever, wondering if that person will have a problem with our race. My guess would be that it's much better nowadays than it was before, but these things don't disappear easily. Even if you are a person of color who hasn't been affected by this crap, your biological parents will probably still have been affected...and your grandparents...and their parents...and it's likely to stay for a bit longer still.

I agree that if everyone could just shake off these words and not be bothered by them, the words would loose their purpose, but I also agree that that's probably easier said than done.

Depending on my mood I mute immediately and report or mess with them a little and then mute and report. I usually play team oriented stuff when I play online, I'm not trying to hear all that slowness. I don't need racist shitheads in a space im at or people trying to be edgy with that bullshit. I love it even more when it's a paid game or something where you can build an inventory thats worth something. All the sweeter to get those ban messages and know that some dumbass just forever locked themselves out of shit they paid for.

I very much approve!

ppl can be very mean and toxic on video games either just because or they're competitive. i just mute them during game and report them afterwards. they're are worse things that have been said and its normal unfortunately
In this case, it wasn't about being competetive, but that's also a factor. I like that you report them!

video games brings out the worst in some ppl. sometimes i rage aswell, more internally and never to the point of verbal abuse. i think it helps to play w other people, i mostly queue with my duo mostly to win but he always defends me if someone says something toxic which is nice

That's nice! I don't think he should have to, but still.🙂

Yes it’s the worst I think it has the most racist users I’ve played a lot and observed never had a mic but the minute something doesn’t go their way and they think you’re anything other than white they will use the N word I could post vids of it right now they probably say it to get a reaction but they say it too easily a lot of racist cowards on that game or of the reasons I don’t play it.

Wait, so you're white and used that word with a single letter * out and offended? That shits crazy. I'm going say so something controversial and think even people who describe that as "the n word" is pretty bad. You honestly should have just said "n word" as your topic. You literally made 100% of everyone say the actual slur in their head. Originally I assumed you were black tbh. This is just crazy to me now 😆

It doesn't offend me, im just saying its pretty distasteful. You probably didn't mean anything by it whatsoever, and again im not black and can't speak for another race. Your post might have been truly wholesome, but imo dont type out the actual word and just replace one letter with a *. You probably feel truly terrible for others and their personal problems, but writing it out like that is literally no different then simply saying the actual word imo.

There is hope indeed, but, like you say, it's a long and complicated process.

So, what were in your inventories again? I hope you choose the most efficient tool or weapon to strike out that opponent of yours.

Nothing powerful enough, unfortunately, and I was too shocked to actually retort, and they disappeared pretty quickly from the spot. But I have written down part of the character's name and remember mostly how the character looked, so we'll see what happens. Don't think I'll say anything if I encounter them again, unless they start, but if they do - to me or anyone else - I'll surely respond.

Wew so you responded? Thought cap was a more silent kill. Yeah, I myself blurted out nonsensical words which I regretted when playing that mortal kombat. Sigh it was set by a PS player. He played a round then gave it to me against the person I knew longer than I knew him. So we tagged team there and I pressed full frikkin random moves with luck happened hahha so ya.. but prior to that, I felt an amount of "pressure" too from the PS player and I was intentionally asking for racing game. He was like, so you asked for it? Here you are. Lol. My guy was just being passive pisces as per usual but he did ended up playing, yay.

He played right after me.

Surely it was not my place so that PS guy had all the rights to choose the game to play. Got trapped and trying to get out I mean, the other 2 girls were just watching, ouch. But I collected bits of info.. not the game, heck I know that game very well.

I need to be more feminine these days. Sigh.

No, I didn't respond. What I meant by "Nothing powerful enough, unfortunately," was that there was nothing powerful enough in my inventory to fight them with. And I wasn't even in a PvP area, so I couldn't fight them if I wanted to. 😄

Listened to my friend's kid (15) play with his friends on rainbow siege. They where talking tons of trash and catch phrases they have no business saying or knowing about. The one that stuck with me and made me laugh was " I'm having flashbacks of Non(Vietnam).

Dude, don't take them seriously. Just give him some lingo verbal ass kicking. Call him a party foul or some other creative indult letting him know he is uncool for saying that.

Have you forgotten what it was like bring young and dumb? What was trash talking like when you were a kid?
