New Deal was mid 1930's, at the beginning of the Roosevelt era! The Great Depression did not end till around 1940-1, when America joined the war!
WWII + Keynesian Economics lifted you guys up. Otherwise, you would've sunk further!
And... 1933 was the worst part of the Great Depression... from then on, the economy slowly grew. It wasn't until I think 1939 when things moved faster...

^^CC, New Deal was in 1933. The Great Depression ended in 1940. It was the miraculous but scientific Keynesian Economics that brought you guys into prosperity. New Deal does not even matter.

This is easy to talk about. It's only the Keynesian Economics that requires longer explanation/discussion, which I will discuss after my final exams.
As to why FDR is the best American President, let's not complicate things:
1929 - Great Depression began
1933 - the worst part of the Great Depression
- same year FDR became the president
1934-5 - new deal program launched.
1935-41 - great depression continues
1941 - America joined World War II
sometime in the early 1940s - great depression ended.
1945 - America and its allies won the war
- America became a superpower.
- America became part of the Security Council of the UNITED NATIONS. The Security Council is the body that sanctions states violating outlawed activities like use of force (aggressive war in layman's term)
I mean, just imagine how the US became a superpower during his tenure, out of bankruptcy and economic depression in the 1930s. That was a big turn-around of events.
Now I don't know how the New Deal Program is relevant in this thread's discussion. For one thing, this program was launched at the beginning of his tenure and had little to do in how he turned an impoverished country into a superpower.
