Can you give me your opinions/experiences - I'll probably go with a 2010 model and am considering the following

Chevy Equinox
Ford Edge
Toyota Rav4
Honda CR-V

I'm open to other suggestions as well...

ew. none of the above...u like those curvy types— do u live where it snows?

I don't like square, boxy looking SUVs although I would probably consider a Ford Escape as well. As far as snow, it melts quickly so I'm only interested in 2wd models (better fuel economy). I really want an SUV to get me higher up off the ground and so that I have cargo space if needed.

I don't particularly care for their gas mileage, but most cars to seem to fair all that much better. And I don't like the look of the Prius or newly designed Honda Civic Hybrid.

If only the Amish buggies were a little more stylish LOL

@Amethyst: Want a small SUV to get me a little higher up than my Civic. I need something not much larger than what I'm used to driving. These have the styling I like and are within my price range. My mechanic said the cost for upkeep amongst these models is negligible (and I trust him, he charges me everything at his cost... I have to pay him for labor for my oil change by having a few beers with him as he refused my $ $ ). Oh, he's a Virgo 🙂 (NOT The Virgo though)

Cost factors greatly into my decision. I'm looking at around $ 25K.

My biggest priority is probably getting me up off the ground, I'm in a 2003 Civic Hybrid (falling to pieces mind you) currently and get very frustrated with larger vehicles in front of me that I can't see around/through/over. By the same token, I do not want something that is going to be too much larger (longer/wider) than my Civic.

2wd is fine and 4cyl is fine, I don't have a need anymore power.

I still want something stylish, but not flashy or granola looking. I work in a professional position and want something that speaks to that.

In the end, I want something stylish yet versatile, good gas mileage with low environmental impact (comparatively speaking), dependable with low maintenance over the long term, and I don't want to spend a lot of money on it!

(for some reason that description sounds so Cappie to me)

Smart move to thoroughly research your purchase, there are several sites that you could use to do side by side comparisons of the specs and also read professional and customer reviews. (Such as Edmunds.com)

As you probably know it's a fairly short list in that price range, you might want to also check out the Nissan Rogue and the Mazda CX 7, they look stylish (although that's subjective) and are in the same price range with comparable features, both companies have solid reputations although I'd rank Mazda as the last place among the asian brands on the list. I've worked for Mazda and they aren't quite up to Honda standards, Nissans are quite dependable but the Rogue uses a constantly variable transmission which is a relatively new feature and so there isn't much long term reliability data to look at.

If it were my money I'd be staying with Honda, I've had 5 cars/suvs and 4 bikes from Honda so I'm gonna be biased, but that's because I'm happy with with every purchase.

I've never been too keen on Mazdas or Nissans, I think I view them as lower quality and would be embarrassed to be seen driving one - it's a status thing I suppose (sorry, don't mean to offend anyone who drives one).

As far as the CVT - my Civic Hybrid uses that technology and I had some problems with my transmission a few years back, I forget what their fix was, I know they flushed it many times over though.

I test-drove the Rav4 and CR-V today - hands down the Rav4 is a much smoother ride and has more get up and go (both 4cyl). The Rav4 is also much quieter, you can't hear the road and with the Honda, the transmission is rather noisy when hitting the gas and revs real high - definitely not a smooth transition. However, a plus for the CR-V, it handles and feels much like my Civic which keeps me in a certain comfort zone.

Tomorrow, I will get to the Equinox (scratch any others I mentioned).

All dealers basically gave me the same price, so I can't consider that option - although, I do believe I have convinced Toyota to go down another grand after quoting Edmunds TMV, but then they're going to try to hit my trade in as I haven't presented that option yet (I have a plan for that too though).

I may have to test drive them all again *groans* (I really hate decisions)

Didn't like the Mazda...

Best deal was ::drum roll:: the Equinox... not only did I get the best pricing on it, it has more features than the CR-V or the RAV4, it was the most comfortable (nice plush seats - both front and rear), would by far be the most comfortable on road trips, and its what I felt the safest in! *wipes sweat from brow* Glad that is over with and I'm out from under my ready to die Civic.

Buy American!

For the most part, no matter what you buy you're buying an American BUILT vehicle! They're all built here with a few exceptions (and even some American brands are built in Mexico). Its a global economy Baby! Guess where American brand cars in China are built... CHINA! And as are foreign brands here, American brands are the biggest sellers there!

Oh, and I can guarantee that my new Chevy is LOADED with foreign parts!

What I don't get about my whole car buying experience... the first salesman wanted to take me to dinner (asked multiple times), the second wanted me to play Cougar and the third joked about us going and "parking" while on our test drive and by the end of the day after all was said and done wanted us to go have drinks. Silly men!! Two for one deal? Buy the car get the man...
