I really begin to question myself on this and wonder if today's anime is plagued with too much fan service. I think Hayao Miyazaki said it better himself "The Anime industry suffers because it's full of Otaku". He has a right to his opinion like everyone else though personally I feel too much fan service destroys the point of a good plot and feels lazy and un-creative to substitute something serious and has meaning with panty shots, jiggling boobs, harems and far more shit that would not be appropriate to exactly talk about. It's one of the many reasons why my anime list is so low and why I just watch older anime because I can honestly not keep up with whatever comes out these days. My friend would recommend Kill la Kill but just from the few episodes I've seen of it along with the few episodes of Sword Art Online, it looks like something I just can't get into. That and I've actually read some of SAO Light Novels and found that the anime just detracts too much from the source. If you're an Otaku that's fine. But I watch whatever whenever. I have a wide scope and watch a lot of American, Canadian, and British animation, not just pure Japanese animation. If I did I'd go mad.
Here's the article about Hayao Miyazaki- http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.841079-Hayao-Miyazaki-Anime-Suffers-Because-the-Industry-is-Full-of-Otaku
Does anyone who regularly watches anime agree with this?

I loved kill la kill not only because of the graphics but the story is really out there and it has a good explanation as to why the girls need to wear skimpy revealing outfits, its really quite interesting their steely resolve outshines the stupidity of their outfits so you don't realise that they're wearing slutty outfits you only notice how badass they're being.

I love anime but this otaku bullshit is getting way outta hand, I fucking hate it when fans in general impede on an artist's craft whether it be music, anime, film etc by liking it; therefore giving the artist a lot of money ultimately corrupting the artist with greed resulting in shit loads of exploding tits and panty shots in to sate the tastes or a thousand bottom feeding, mole men.

Yeah I know how you feel. I feel I could've liked Kill la Kill but it's just I couldn't get into it. Maybe some other time I could but you know. I think those who do the plots or art of anime shouldn't be Otaku but people who actually have normal human interaction and study people to know how to apply life in IRL to the anime to at least have a way for the show to relate with people. I mean cmon, how often does one guy have like 4 women trying to have a crazy ass harem over him or vice versa? Probably not often but if that was the case I would advise that guy or girl not to date any of them. And how often do you see boobs honestly bigger than beach balls and some stupid school girl wearing mini skirts? No often but no school or private school I know of would make their female students wear miniskirts. lol.

Whenever I look at anime for the upcoming season, there are at least 4 shows that have picture covers of girls with huge boobs that you can automatically tell will have a focus on fan service. The shows are usually not even creative or entertaining, but just the same type of plot with characters that look a little different. But, the anime industry is run by men who like that stuff. Look at how mad the fans were when Kyoto animations decided to produce Free! They were livid that they were producing something that wasn't directed at a male audience. Luckily, things are starting to change. I don't think fan service is as big as it was about 5 years or so ago. I do still think it's very prevalent in the industry and it's not going to go away completely.

I also tried watching Kill la Kill, though only one episode. I was really unimpressed with what I saw and also didn't like the skimpy outfits. But, a lot of people liked it and it was probably at least decent since it was made by the same people as TTGL. I personally can't get passed my initial impression, though.

I feel it really hasn't changed. In fact it's gotten worse and may just get worst until the community wakes up and moves onto something else. When the industry realizes that, they'll cut a lot of it out and get more creative instead of using fanservice 24/7

My weeaboo level is very weak, and I'm a bit too old to watch anime, but I've noticed a trend in current anime series is that all the stories happen inside a high school and a big part of the plot is generally school relationship and kiddy stuff, and this is making it really hard for me to get into any story, I'm pretty sure this was not so present in most animes of the 70s/80s/90s.
I can live with fan service if the story is good, but all this "high-schoolers saving the world while trying to score good marks" crap is really lame.

I know how you feel. I kinda get tired of the stupid high school settings. Why can't they just keep school out of the equation and have something more that both teens, young adults, and older audiences can agree with instead of using something that just gets played out and is straight up gimmicky? I'd rather see some 22 or 30 year olds tackle life problems and figure out ways around them and learn to deal with something that will become a greater threat then themselves down the road.

Tbh, I'd be happy with at least high school age characters. It's always surprising learning the ages of characters in a show you're watching because you're like 'wow, s/he's only 13—? I thought for sure they were at least 16 or 17'. Middle school age seems to be very common in anime. Though, I suppose for harem and ecchi genre that high school is more common for moral reasons. Japan seems to have a thing with young girls, though. If you've ever read romance manga, it's common for the girl to be around 16/17 while her love interest is about 25/26. It's cultural differences, I guess.

I really enjoyed reading Tokyo Ghoul since the main character is actually in college and about 19/20 at the beginning. College-age main characters are rare, unfortunately. There are some good manga and anime with even older main characters, though, but not nearly enough when you compare with middle and high school-aged ones.

Yea, I'm no fan of character service meant to please viewers and it makes me a little sad when I see it. But eh, what can we do? As long as the subgroup "Otaku" exists then the fan servicing will continue to as well.

I strongly recommend watching anything produced by "Ufotable". The production quality is high which makes for a treat on the eyes. The stories for Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night are dark and with no shame for blood and intense violence. The allusions of nudity are more for the sake of story and not to please the viewers.

Fate Zero and Fate Stay Night are on my list of ever memorable Anime/Visual Novels.
