I'll play devil's advocate. This is one of the reasons why i dont support hunting unless absolutely necessary and done sportingly- What if it was legal for someone to just hide somewhere and shoot people as they mind their business? I love my life and have developed a respect for different life. Even cutting down/ out meat intake in most cases. Just to give a take on how hunting turns some people's stomach and why they would try to reduce it. Also i saw 2 deers yesterday i didnt want to kill them for no good reason. Just my take on it.

You want to chased around by a band of lunatics, tranquilized and trussed up in a net to get your next Depro-Provera shot for "free?" 😉click to expand

A simple solution would be to reintroduce natural predators into the area to control the deer populations. Then we would not even have to pay for ammo. Just sayin.

This plan(or "experiment" as the article puts it)is not only fiscally-wasteful. There's another issue in play: who in their right mind will continue hunting the local deer with the intent of consumption, with the addition of hormonal birth control in the prey's system?
Byproducts of these contraceptives are prone to making their way up the food chain if other species, including humans, eat the venison.
In terms of using elephants as a shining example? The same rule wouldn't apply, given that elephants are generally not(if ever)consumed by humans, nor are they fed birth control in the wild. Since there is hardly an overabundance of elephants(due to extended gestational periods & having been hunted for their tusks in the past)it's not really a fair comparison.
In summary; I doubt many will be thrilled to hunt wild game for personal consumption, if it's tainted with medication containing artificial-estrogen, thus giving hunters less incentive to help control the abundance of wild deer.
Poorly-planned solution that reeks of desperation, IMO.

Trapping . . . white-tail deer.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!! 😄

Plus, having those predators in close proximity to human habitation is not going to end well.

Exactly Rabbit.
Think about the backstrap sandwiches for lunch.... with potato salad, beans, and a pickle... etc.
$ 10/plate

We'll need a grinder for the scraps.
We can make mini venison burgers and sell them to the yuppies as "Locally Sourced and Organic Sliders"click to expand

This is crazy. This needs to be sent right over to PETA. Wonder what the PETA and environmentalists are saying to this?
We have hunters who donate deer meat to the food banks keeping the homeless people and people who cannot afford food fed.

I would think that PETA and the environmentalists would be all over it-- sounds like it's right up their lunatic alley.

probably. And yet they bitch about slaughterhouse animals being fed hormones. SMFH!
Honestly I think the most humane solution is to save the pills for the Georgetown chicks, and encourage people to safely hunt the deer.
More sustainable way to get meat (those free-lovin deer will replace their population wicked fast, so no worries about that), healthier, cheaper, and less need for factory farmed meat.click to expand

How stupid can people be? This was brought up last year and made the news again this week. Ammo at approximately $ 16.00 a box vs. $ 30,000.00 to put deer on the pill for 70 - 120 deer—... What will these assholes think of next? I know of many who will go in, shoot the deer for food and solve the problem in one day. Unfuckingbelievable!
Town to Put Deer on the Pill
Alternative to hunting them
By: Daniel D. Snyder
ommunities in New York??s Westchester County have long used hunters to control deer populations, but now one town, Hastings-on-Hudson, is taking a more progressive approach. The town, together with Tufts University??s Center for Animals and Public Policy, will conduct the first experiments in deer regulation using immunocontraception, or, more simply, birth control.
More than 50 residents have already volunteered to help with the experiment, tracking the animals so they can be trapped and treated.
—It's brilliant,?? said center director Dr. Allen T. Rutberg of the contraceptive vaccine, which will use the animal??s own immune system to prevent it from fertilizing offspring. —It works on a lot of animals, even elephants.??
The small town, which measures only about two square miles, is believed to be home to some 70 to 120 deer.
The program will cost an estimated $ 30,000 for the first two years, but Hastings mayor Peter Swiderski is confident the issue is pressing enough to warrant the effort. In 2011 there were 16 car collisions reportedly involving deer, and Mayor Swiderski himself contracted lyme disease from a deer tick, as did his entire family.
The town plans to submit the proposal to the State's Department of Environmental Conservation within a month.
