I thought of that? But I'm thinking back then the great minds we worship today operated out of necessity.

Now, the point of life seems to be make stuff, sell stuff, buy stuff, use stuff, have stuff.

Stuff.

It's created jobs and given money value, but...

If we don't all just die under the weight of all the stuff we create we're headed for Wall-E territory.

And there may not be any great minds left with all the boys and girls trying to become Tony Hawkses and lady gagas and that apprentice guy.

Life wasn't as simple as it is now, though.

Now almost everyone who isn't dying of thirst or hunger in a third world country's life can be summed up as go to school, get a job, buy lots of unncessary things, have sex, make a baby, die.

Those are the six milestones everyone who isn't smart enough to split an atom or clone a sheep but isn't dying of hunger or thirst in a 3rd world country achieves in their life.

Our goals, desires, accomplishments etc mean nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Which is the greatest thing about human beings: we continue on with life despite being conscious of this.

What does it all mean, anyway?

If we die and there's a heaven, then what? We lives some more, except as robots without the bad things like unhappiness to make us appreciate the good things like joy?

What of if permanent blackness comes after death? "Well that was pointless" would be the thought if non-existent things could think. Even if you lived a full, interesting life permanent blackness seems a bit of a shitty way to end things, right?

The universe? Allegedly so huge there's millions if not thousands of planets out "there" wherever "there" is, with alternate realities existing side by side with this one. Aliens. Demons and ghosts. What'll happen to them when the world ends?

And success is the healthiest form of revenge.

You need BOTH pain and anger, though.

Without pain to mellow out your anger with sympathy you have someone who hates the world.

Neither of these two people have any ambition besides to cause others pain (person 1) or to protect themselves (person 2).

Someone with both has the odd combination of sympathy and a thick skin.

They will have their revenge, but they won't hurt people getting it.

And the only way I know how that is achievable is through success.

I'm speaking from personal experience, by the way.

I know one person who fits either of the above two people (anger w/o pain, pain w/o anger)in real life.

And I am the third type of person.

The root of ambition, to me, is a combination of pain and anger. The two of them together will spur you into action.

Action that will be considered ambitious by others.

When really all that drives you is the by-product of those two things together: revenge

I don't fully agree with the anger+pain=revenge=healthy success although I agree in more modern times it's become the most acceptable/most used concept.
I put the blame squarely on Nirvana (the band, fwiw) 🙂

I dunno, man.

From my own experiences as someone who at first had nothing to prove to someone who wanted to prove something to himself, the two things I can pin point that have given me that spark are anger and pain.

Without the latter all I did was be an asshole to everyone around me and without the former I just sat moping in self-pity.

And again revenge isn't necessarily confined to other people:

You can seek revenge against a former YOU, you know.
