Mere Exposure Effect. Your mind has internalized the mirror image (which, keep in mind, is reversed right-to-left) as the "correct" way that you look. When you see yourself in a photo, the asymmetries that are present in everyone's face become magnified in your perspective, and you think you look grotesque. Anyone else who sees you in a photograph will think it looks just like how you look all the time.

If you want the truth simply ask someone else how you look.

I made a thread like this perhaps a year or two ago.

Unfortunately its that type of (perceptive) distorton that discourages people from posting pictures and viddys of themselves. Im trying to get this girl who works at the bakery to do some YouTube cooking videos, she wants to be the next Rachel ray or something) so im like, I'll do the camerawork and you cook something and then I will edit it and put it on youtube. She says, No im ugly on video, blah, blah, blah....so im like fuck it then.

Takes a lot of guts to put your image out there i completely understand that though.

I wonder this too! I am so damn unphotogenic it's not even funny...it's like the camera catches my absolute worst moments.
Yet, on film it's the opposite. I always assumed it was because I am very animated and have an expressionate face. Better to see it live. Screen shots don't work for me 😛

I have friends however, that look way better in pictures than they do in person :X

Oh great so I am fat and ugly!! I much prefer to lie to myself in the mirror.

And it doesn't work asking someone else...you know "does my bum look big in this?"

How many people are going to give you the truth??

I think if you look great in the mirror chances are you look great to others. You yourself however are simply not used to seeing what others see.

You could try to make yourself a "true image mirror"--a mirror that shows you what others see--close at least.

I did the same thing and found that I don't look all that different from what a regular mirror shows.

It took some getting used to though. And the line in the middle is annoying.

You could also look into buying one...expensive though. http://www.truemirror.com/>truemirror.com
