Anyone from Singapore, been there, have family or friends from there??

I am working on my senior project, which is a boutique hotel design, and I was assigned Singapore for my location.
I have done research (I know how to google,) but I want to know stuff I can't find on Google from people who actually live there or have been there.

It would be mucho appreciated 🙂

Thanks!!

I've been there and it's relatively small country. You can easily travel with those cabs anywhere and it's really safe and secure place to live and visit. From the airport you can easily get a cab and just tell the driver where to and they'll gladly help you out (tip: go for the taxi that are not plain black or MB model they charge less)
Foods are cheap you can grab a bite for $ 2 SGD.
Bars I would recommend INSOMNIA lots of foreigners go there, you won't miss home and they have sets of live bands.
For fine dining you can go to Clarke quay and enjoy varieties of scrumptious food for around $ 150-600 + SGD, you can add excitement by riding the river boat.
Since you are talking about boutique the biggest one I know is at the back of Marina Bay sands, signature brands are there.
Hope you'll enjoy your Singapore trip!

Ohhh, how exciting...

Could you possibly share a little information on the specs of your 'proposed' property, it would be easier to provide the correct information which you may need 🙂

yeah, it's 7 stories I believe...I am really only responsible for designing the first two floors since the remaining floors would be guest rooms and we only have to design 2 types of guest rooms.

We have to do the project in the metric system (which is a huge mind fuck being American.)
Each floor is about 944 sq m

I am required to have a restaurant, bar/lounge, and kitchen on the 2nd floor...for which I have to design everything from the name and logo, to staff uniforms, cutlery, menus, etc.

Other than reception, concierge, and employee facilities on the 1st floor it's up to me to fill the rest of the space.

Thanks! I'm not going, at least not right now, wish I was though. Sounds awesome so far 🙂

I know it's a bit like America as far as being a young "country," and not having a real cultural identity...more of a melting pot of asian cultures...but what would you say, if anything, is "uniquely Singaporean?" Any food, style s, traditions, etc?

So far I am leaning towards an eclectic modern-asian-tropical kind of feel since that's the vibe I'm getting overall.

What style would this boutique hotel be in (business, hip, etc.)?

How many star rating would it be?

Where will you (your group) decide to locate this property?

Which consumer market will it be targeting (age range etc.)?

Seven Floors is rather big for a 'boutique' hotel, or would each floor consists of very few rooms otherwise the sheer number of rooms available would make it rather impossible to fit itself in the category of 'boutique...

We aren't required to pick a site, but I found a place downtown near the Supreme court building.
The style is whatever we deem most appropriate. We have to pick a concept most appropriate for the city and design around that.

The guest rooms are huge. Like oversized, so there will not be many per floor.

It's just a conceptual design so I'm trying not to get too caught up in the details of things I'm not responsible for designing.
Though I do have to design the exterior facade...I'm not even paying attention to the floors above the 3rd

It seems like such an awesome opportunity to really mix and blend so many cultures and design style s together.

Cus you have the modern, the British Colonial, tropical, Chines, Indian, Malaysian. Defiantly a challenge but one that could pay off beautifully.

Yeah exactly! Which is kind of my signature - mixing style s and periods.

My concept was going to be Rojak...which is a dish that includes influence from all the major cultures there and means "mix" in Malay...also plays into the emphasis on food there.

But now I am leaning towards a kaleidoscope, because it's the same idea, but I can pull more elements out of it like color, light, mirrors, etc.
Does that sound corny though?

Conceptual design in general is corny imo, but that's what they want...that's what they're gonna get.

Hehe! I was reading LadyScorp's questions, and thinking to myself what Taurus questions I would ask.

How do you feel in the city, Is it overwhelming? exciting? Do you want to go back to a space that feels vibrant and adventurous? or a space to relax and rejuvenate?

My senses are too fucking sensitive.

yes, thank you. ^^^

Questions I want to ask, but my Merc is in detriment (or whatever,) so I can't express myself properly like a retard.

Wel since you have chosen that particular location (an area quite steeped in history), I would assume the style to either be understated luxury or business chic/hip as it does seem the most appropriate, considering the 'other' properties you have around it (this is from memory) and the history intertwined with it all.

If it is such a concept, considering what is available in that area, you could make your restaurant/bar/lounge, serving a specific cuisine. Instead of making it international, or traditional Singaporean cuisine, I'd say this because cheap food and moderately priced yet pretty well-known restaurants are abundant in and around the city. Therefore you must make something specific and unique to your 'boutique' hotel, a place that would be able to serve a bite for long hours too, this is after all a city which thrives quite busily 24/7 since the opening of Marina Bay Sands, people will look for a meal even late into the evening. It could serve Asian fare but I would assume really quality yet special Western (Such as Italian, Spanish, Fusion etc. not Gastronomique for it will be too much) would make it more eye-catching and fits the style of boutique. This restaurant (or whatever exists) on the 2nd floor would have to be a main attraction to draw in the crowd to your hotel, especially in that area.

Still at the end of the day, which is the main focus, the incredible rooms (assuming you would have packages to cater and promote the property), or whatever exists on the floors beneath the 3rd?

F&B does pull in the greatest influx of profit, this would seem to be the best option to focus on putting that forward. Perhaps have an outdoor area, or open deck to make the property more attractive, since it is 'boutique', the types that would usually visit, the target market would be high-end but even then a bit quirky because the others would be catered for in the 'traditionally' popular places of visit. Also you are making use of the monuments which surround that local, it could be a marketed feature. In going with the architecture within the area, classical with a modern/contemporary twist would blend in well enough but still be striking whilst keeping harmony without clashing harshly.

Not sure if my ramblings, helped...

City, is vibrant not necessarily overwhelming but there is a constant whirl of activity, like any other cosmopolitan city it truly is a melting pot of nationalities. It is astoundingly clean, restaurants or rather to dine out would be a normal and not insane luxury, since the pricing range is very broad with a multitude of options available to all, eating a late bite would be but a socializing ritual. Despite all this it is not exactly a nerve-wracked nor a stressed city where the speed it so swift, it leaves one in a tizzy, despite all this the people of the city are rather relax, calm, most definitely lovers of life in their slower pace of living (as compared to other well known cities within Asia).

Again, it depends upon which style you (your group) should choose, the main focus, and the target market. With what decisions that have been laid concrete so far, the promoted extra large rooms would be a space of relaxation and rejuvenation, besides if one were to be vibrant and adventurous, one would easily head out or pay a visit to the Casino and voila, the room would not be stayed in for long 🙂

Well, this is all written by someone who knows individuals from there and myself having visited Singapore for short periods too.
