What are your thoughts on Dominance Hierarchy theory (relational dominance hierarchies)?

So science says that there are a spectrum of social systems that are present in animal populations from monkeys, birds, hamsters to dogs.

Science also says that the theory of alpha males isn’t true, and stemming from the concept of alpha male dogs isn’t the same. Wolf packs don’t have alpha males and females, and observing animal packs as a social order that the transcends to human relationships isn’t actually realistic or scientifically accurate.

This linear ranking system is a “pecking order” that can be egalitarianism to despotism ie - everyone is equal and deserves equal rights to the exercise of absolute power vs an exercise of absolute power which can be cruel and oppressive but still accepted.

I believe that there are aspects of this theory in society, and we are shifting to a more despotism mindset in society where the weak are not able to survive and social constructs are set against them from birth onwards. Socially we gravitate to egalitarianism and this is the promoted socially accepted mindset but our society is increasingly becoming a despotism apocalyptic like destructive planet.

Not to get political: but you can see these two mindsets playing out in North American political parties to a degree.

Essentially social dominance is a player in the collapse and extinction of civilization as we know it today. Tyranny is now being supported more and more through extremism, and sadly anyone deemed lesser than - ie - perceived beta makes, women, children, elderly, disabled, LGBTQIA2s+ and any POC is classified into categories that are increasing discrimination that fall into subcategories that deserve their own protection and discussion.

The PEW research Center has a lot of information on this topic.

Lastly, I think the promotion of this type of divisional thinking further promotes this mindset and the roots of this “social hierarchy” is deeply imbed in racism and classism that is ultimately part of the downfall of our current society and has played a key part in previous societal breakdowns we’ve seen before in history.

There's a lot to take in here. Slightly different, but related, didn't the person who thought of the lone wolf theory denounce it as bullshit?



To use a practical example and I am happy for people to disagree with me, but in a business a manager shouldn't be a narcissist or a bully. There is evidence that people with psychopathic tendencies get promoted quicker - such as in Jon Ronson's book. My opinion is you do need to care about the business and be sacrificial while still being assertive and having an ego. There's a reason why in a fast paced hostile environment like a kitchen most chefs are often aggressive and it does work. If a chef is a wimp he won't command a kitchen, same as a building site or something military. You have to be prepared to be seen as a bastard if you have discipline people or fire someone. You can't be everyone's pal.



I've decreed alpha, delta, beta as being bollox as people are a mixture of all of those.



I think were your research breakdowns is when you are talking about divisions. As I've said before the biggest divisions are money and beauty. Ugly and rich, beautiful and poor will always do better than someone seen as average no matter how alpha.



I think the other thing about division is an element of clubs, you don't play by the rules ya get the El Bow. Have a look at Germaine Greer, left wing, third wave feminist said some stuff about trans and got banned from speaking at left leaning prestigious universities in the UK. I'm a believer in free speech and by curbing it you effectively have one sided debates were everyone agrees. The downfall which is such an overly dramatic term even Oscar Wilde would reject it is wrapping people in cotton wool and people figuratively sticking their fingers in their ears if someone disagrees with them, usually you find in a debate most people aren't that far apart and a lot of it is semantics or just as simple reinterpreting an idea a different way. The whole talk of extremism is actually divisive. I can honestly say I've never met an extremist on any spectrum.

The idea that extremism isn’t seen in society today is a fallback, if you don’t see it, it doesn’t exist. This mentality is very harmful, because its used today to negate that racism is still alive, that extremism in todays society has been subdued and it hasn’t, it’s very much alive and well and its present in our current society in an extreme fashion akin to Civil War Era extremism, that divide is growing rapidly.

How the generic “Alpha vs Beta” mindset plays into this discussion is very much despotism, where absolute power is the promoted “alpha male” and preferred belief. I might be jumping around here and falling hard on bended knee to prove this BUT “alpha male” beliefs stem very much from a past mindset of “Men were men” ie “White males were alpha, and dominated society and social constructs”. This idea is the core belief behind North America’s critical mindset that alphas lead society, make political decisions and are the backbone to the countries past and future.

To give an extremist example, look no further than the Trump – Make America Great campaign (I don’t want to get political but this is a prime example for now). These men were classified as white males, who very much perceived themselves as “lone wolves” and “alpha males”. When in reality majority of these men were loners, socially recluse, susceptible to extremist mentalities that preyed upon their seclusion in order to create a fake “included” “club” type mentality that gave them a sense of belonging. This example also plays into this same population being prone to getting all their political and social news from the likes of Alex Jones, who continues to profit off of the insecurities of white males who…for lack of a better way to say it, want power “again”.

Extremism in “alpha males” mentality is very much a toxic mentality that cater to the desire of social power.

In situations where this applies, empathy/sympathy is reduced the higher someone is in status. The direct interaction from people/situation lessens in impact for people in higher ranks and so does accountability.

This mindset was once very promoted in schools of business, and you're correct the data does prove that empathy is vastly reduced the higher a person ranks in status and the business world. However, due to Interpersonal Communication preferences for workplaces currently, it's no longer a tolerated strategy to gain status.

As a society we really do reinforce this system, and some argue that the system never left...it just rebranded itself to maintain a level of concealed control in society.

I think a time will come when our losses are so detrimental in society through an immense war, environmental - social breakdown that it would be dismantled entirely, maybe then we will move towards a more egalitarian society. But just that thought alone, is depressing...because it means that great loss and breakdown is the only way to remove this aspect of control in our society that thrives off of power over others.

Massive storms have nothing to do with aging grids, and in addition the individual costs of upgrading homes is being ignored. Electric doesn't fall from the sky into power lines, someone somewhere is bearing the impact of its generation. It just moves it from one location to another.



I'm not defending big gas, I'm defending a right to chose. I'm not inventing the war, it's not just national its state level in some places as well. Ny and CA for instance.
