spectacle drummers are dumb, I mean drum machines have been used in studio recordings since at least the 1930s, and a song like 'Take On Me' is obviously machine-drummed. So drummers are just for shows. It used to be a very low profile player, started getting puffed up with jazz improv, then the beatles put a drummer in the spotlight, then it went into modern rock.

Its flashy so that what drummers are gravitating towards. I like the drummers who are all about groove and

feel, they dont have to be sophisticated. Christoph Schneider (Rammstein) has always chosen groves that

can be played by ten year olds, but try replicating his feel, the way he supports the song, the musicality.

Look at michael jacksons drummer, cymbal beating aside, in terms of groove he is a god. That is much more inspiring that double base chops.
