I can't even tell you how much this bugs me...I've been talking about all these good songs on our continuous loop cd at work, but I need to mention that not all of the songs are good. Get ready to hear something shocking and shameful. There's a g-damned cover of the White Stripe's "Fell in Love With a Girl". But it's done by a woman, I kid you not, in a hip-hop sorta way. It is the worst thing I think I've ever heard in my life. And she changed it from "Fell in Love with a Girl" to "Fell in Love with a Boy", and she added all these HORRIFIC vocal "flourishes" to the song. It's tragic. She's not a bad singer, not by any means, but OH MY GOSH, if you do hip-hop do NOT cover a White Stripes song. UGH - and here's the sad thing, I tried to tell my coworkers what the deal is with this song, that they should listen to the GOOD version, and they're all like..."who're the White Stripes"? and one said, "I don't really like the White Stripes". LOL, kjgifjgjfnjnifgn. I just hate to hear a great song butchered, is all my prob is.

I haven't heard that cover song. But I don't like Limp Bizkit's cover of "Behind Blue Eyes". And when Guns N Roses did a cover of "Hair of the Dog" was pretty bad too.

Behind Blue Eyes was originally done by The Who and Hair of the Dog was originally done by Nazereth. 🙂

Phoenix, the artist you refer to is Joss Stone and, I hasten to add, she is not a hip-hop artist. She's more kind of soul I think. I have heard the song and I agree with you but believe it or not she was not only given permission to do the song from Jack of the White Stripes himself, but he has also sort of 'gifted' the song to her he liked it that much. The White Stripes have now vowed to only allow her version of the song to be played live!

Truly bad covers:

Atomic Kitten (crap british girl band) - The Tide Is High (Blondie), absolutely disgusting version and makes me sick to my stomach.

Will Young (british winner of pop idol last year) - Light My Fire (The Doors), all I can say is that Jim Morrison must have turned in his grave, several times over.

Rather good covers:

No Doubt - It's My Life (Talk Talk), surprisingly good version, sounds enough like the original to retain it's greatness but with Gwen Stefani's raw vocals to give it some edge.

Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd), excellent version, totally funked up for a different sound but well done and very catchy.

There are more (much more) but cannot think of any at present.

That disappoints me that from now on I will only hear "Fell In Love With a Girl (BOY)" being sung live by this not-hip-hop-but-still-shouldn't-sing-whitestripes-songs person.

I've only heard the No Doubt cover and had no idea it was one, but like the song. I've heard some other song by Atomic Kitten and thought it sucked.

lmao, spot on Phoenix, atomic kitten suck big time.

They're absolute tosh to be honest, I detest them with every fibre of my being.

No Doubt are a good band, seen them live twice, Gwen Stefani is a classic rock chick - I love her.

I do enjoy Gwen Stefani. I like her attitude (brazen, yet positive), passionate on stage presence. Question: what's "tosh" mean? I like to learn new words, then use them in conversation. lol.

Oh old thread, but I felt compelled to mention Megadeth's cover of "Anarchy in the UK" was pretty bad. I never knew that it existed until recently. I like Megadeth but this was a bad cover. Dave Mustaine just doesn't have the voice for doing a Punk song.
