A couple nights ago I got really high and started thinking about sacrifices. I don't know if any of you have ever gotten so high that you can see into the deeper spiritual side of things, but thats how I was. I was thinking about how central the role of sacrifice has been in society. I was thinking about how sacrifices are an attempt to give life to some spiritual idea by giving it the life of something physical. Since then I have been thinking about many examples of people I know who make use of sacrifice on an everyday basis maybe without even ever knowing it, but not always by making a sacrifice of someone else. Sometimes people make a sacrifice of themselves. They transfer the energy of their physical body to some spiritual concept in order to give that concept life. Sometimes they do this by giving something up and sometimes they do it by killing themselves in honor of it. But a lot of this do it and feel a need to do it. Why is this? Is it a way we feel we can achieve immortality, by taking our life out of our bodies and putting it in some ethereal vessel? Or is it that we think that by sacrificing someone else's life we can satisfy the pain and discontent we feel with our own?
