US President Barack Obama has sent a message to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in which he advised him not to run for re-election later this year.
Former US ambassador to Egypt Frank Wisner, who is Obama's special envoy to Egypt, arrived in Cairo on Monday to deliver the message to Mubarak, AP reported.
Wisner told Mubarak that the United States is of the view that —his tenure as president is coming to a close,?? US officials said.
A White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP that Obama would make a statemant on the situation in Egypt on Tuesday some time around 6:30 p.m. Washington time.
After receiving the message from the US president, Mubarak made a televised address to the nation late on Tuesday in which he announced that he would not run for re-election.
However, in his address, Mubarak said he planned to stay in power until the next presidential election, which is scheduled to be held in autumn 2011.
Earlier on Tuesday, millions of people poured into the streets of cities and towns across the country for an eighth consecutive day to again demand that Mubarak resign.
People have been rushing to Cairo to gather at the epicenter of the demonstrations at Tahrir Square, which means Liberation Square, although the government has suspended public transportation in an attempt to restrict access to the capital.
At least 250,000 protesters have been prohibited from marching from el-Arish to Cairo, reports say.
