Unrequited love is one thing, but is there such a thing as unrequited chemistry? What do you think, does chemistry ALWAYS work both ways?

Not sure I understand this. How can you have chemistry with someone if its not reciprocated? I think love and chemistry are two totally different things... you can have love without chemistry and chemistry without love, however wouldnt it be hard to develop a chemistry with someone that never responded to you in that way. That is what unrequited means... unreturned or not reciprocated. I dont know, maybe Im wrong, but I would have to say that if someone THOUGHT they had this chemistry with you and you never felt it.... I'd be more apt to point out that they may just have a chemical imbalance in the brain!

LOL LeoLady!

I'm going to say that there CAN be a such thing as 'unrequited chemistry'

CHEMISTRY - (Feeling) if you look up in the dictionary for the word feeling - You will find two meanings: One of them physical which is sensation involving perception by touch. The second is emotional which is the susceptibility to emotional response. eg. - that person whose gaze or touch sets your soul on fire and in turn they hardly feel a spark.

It is a thin line between unrequited chemistry & unrequited love...

No, it doesn't always work both ways ... which is an interesting thought .... how is that even possible?

LeoLady was also struggling to wrap this around her head. If a person has chemistry with another, then this other has to feel it also, or there is no chemistry WITH the other.

Yet, it happens, or at least people think it's chemistry ... must be something else, eh?

Yeah but feeling is not the same as chemistry IMO. To define chemistry (the science of - which is really what chemistry is... we just use it in society to desribe a certain feeling) is the study of matter and energy and of the interaction between them.... key word being between. So, for me.... it just seems like it would be hard pressed to be unrequited if looking at it in terms of interaction between the two forces. IDK.... I'm just saying for me its hard to understand it being one sided, but to each his own I guess!!!

Hum ...... what is it then?

Maybe it's just the power of the mind that is getting signals from the libido. Sexual desire is a strong muther fucker sometimes, and if impulses are sent to the brain, and we know how powerful the brain is ..... then it's probably possible that the mind can indeed play tricks on you and make you think it's something else.

You see someone you think is hot, and you're horny as hell, and so it's your own lust taking control over you and merely thinking it's some kind of etheric attraction that draws you two together .... when really, your just lusting.

And since you broke it down like (went all scientific - Thomas Dolby on me - LOL)that I see your P-O-V (scientically - matter, energy, etc.) on this thing, MsLeoLady 😛

On another level, emotional level -

I (society) was looking at it from a 'feelings' perspective only as I associate the word chemistry with feelings first, science second (and my understanding of the question).

I need to think more on the chemistry/feelings thing though...

Off to ponder...

BTW - good question OP

Haven't you ever met people you felt an instant unexplainable attraction to? It's not libido, I know my libido and it's compatible with 90% of the female population, meaning I should feel this all the time..but I don't.

Like the other day I was in a store with a friend and he was familiar with the girl in the register. So while they were talking I caught the eye of another girl standing beside the girl in the register: the air got real thick as we tried looking away from eachother (because you don't stare at strangers, right) but we always ended up looking back. Nothing left to do but smile like two embarrased schoolgirls till my friend was finished talking and we left the store. Out in the open I just had to take a deep breath. Whatever happened in there was not your average 'boy meets pretty girl' scenario. She was good-looking sure, but I see good-looking girls all the time and none of them make an impression that fast just by simply being. And I know she felt it too, that's why I was wondering if the other party always feels it too or if it's individual.

Last time I felt this way about someone was with that Pisces from another thread, and prior to that I don't recall but I know it's happened more than twice. And I'm not talking chemistry as in "we get along very well together". I'm talking chemistry beyond libido, beyond physical attraction. Something that just changes the atmosphere and makes the room move (not an earthquake) the minute you set your eye on that person.

* other feel a deep connection with them, while they feel nothing.

I fall into this category. I am sincerely and genuinely interested in the people I meet. With a world seemingly filled with lonely people, people often take it to mean something that it does not. Because I generally accept people on their terms, people like being around that. I just get that everyone wants to be loved and accepted so I offer it freely but that doesn't mean I am crushed if I never see you again. Know what I mean?

This is a great thread Dogs. I have always wondered what people meant by "chemistry" since different people mean different things by it.

I have had the experience of meeting someone who when our eyes met shook my entire world. In that case, it was very much mutual. But the connection was so intense, it terrified us both and he went off into that good night. 🙂
