Idk about you, but I DON'T get "butterflies" every time a guy calls me "baby" "honey" "sweety" or any other petname when we 1st start dating.

I'd much rather a guy start off by calling me my real name until things get serious so that when we finally do get serious & he calls me "baby" or a unique name, I'll know he means it & I'll feel more special.

I hate it when guys call EVERY girl "baby" or the same pet names. It makes me think that you're trying to be too charming and/or that you're not genuine.

I won't call a man "baby" unless he's my man or atleast someone I'm damn near in a relationship with.

If someone uses up all the petnames on girls they don't consider relevant or long-term potential, what on earth will you call the girl you actually do commit to?

1 thing I've noticed about alot of players is that they conveinantly use the same pet names for every girl! I'm NOT saying that all the men who do this are players BUT I find it highly coincidental though =P

1 minute you're feeling like you're on top of the world after your crush called you a unique pet name...and thennnnnn the music fades as soon as you hear him calling every other girl that! I'd much rather a man give me a unique nickname when I'm the ONLY 1 he gives it to. If not, all those pet names shouldn't cause any reactions from us gals b/c there's no feelings/true meaning behind it.

Am I the only one?! (looks around)

I think they have their place in a relationship, but with the right timing and should be something unique that is only shared with that one person and not to be thrown around without a care. My lady and I sought to choose a name for eachother through texting and we both replied "bright-eyes" at the same time. Many other instances did we share the same thoughts and mannerisms like that so we started with the names early on (about 2 weeks)

My brother's wife calls him Schatzi (which is German for "Love," "sweetheart," "darling" You get the point). I think it's fairly cute actually. Most pet names sound better in another language lol. I was seeing one gy who once called me "Bunny." I kind of liked it because it deviated from the norm. I also like it when guys call me "Love." But I can't stand really unusual, uber sweet pet names. I also can't stand baby talk. There is a time and place for everything. I do have a thing where I have more respect for guys when they call me by my first name. I feel like it shows they are actually paying attention to me or trying to get my attention. I'm not a huge user of pet names. I'll use the occasional "Babe" or something to that degree, but I generally call the guy by his first name or a nickname more often (if his name can be turned into one).

Well I take that back. If the name is unique & 1 that is unique to me personally, that's 1 thing. BUT I'm talking those universal names like "baby" "sweet heart"...ya know, names a man can call ANY female!

I like when guys give me my own personanl nickname b/c of a specific memory, situation or occurance. Once a guy called me, "Angela" from the movie "Why did I get married 2!" Now I wasn't too upset about that pet name (sneaky smile)

My 1 friend & her fiance call eachother "BABE-O. Instead of calling eachother "baby" or "babe" they call eachother babe-o! Now see I think that's different & def. unique!

But DON'T call me "snookums" or "boo bear" if you call every girl in the world that!

Lol, my roommate and her best friend call each other boobear. And I'm (as we as my best friend/roommate) their "slightly less than boobear." 😛

lol but see that's different! You guys find humor in it! It's not just some pick up line a guy uses on every girl or on everybody!

One guy called me "cupcake," and I was like ohhh heck no!

And I mean keep in mind guys, you can ALWAYS tell when the name someone gives you is given only to you vs. 100 other girls.

Hahaha, it's okay. I wasn't trying to make a point. I just thought it was funny you mentioned boo bear, because it made me think of my close friends.

My first name starts with "B"...I think that Bliss just sounded right.

I would hope he don't run around calling everyone Bliss.

Or maybe that is how he keeps everyone straight, they get a pet name based on the first letter of their name. 😕 😛

Hey maybe he does! But then again, you can't help but to blush b/c you know it took some effort & creativity for him to come up with your "nick/petname." It's the darn universal names that I can't stand!

And it's even WORSE when they include petnames in with sweet talk. It only makes me suspicious of their intentions.

As with anything, I don't like it when someone says something that's not coming from a genuine place. Don't just say something just for the sake of saying it! All those other girls might get butterflies and/or want to give up the booty if you call them "baby" but NOT me! He's gonna have to try a little harder than that!

I gotta' say, "Dumb Ass" wasn't making it with me.

LOL!!! 🙂

I just melt when I'm called 'Babe', 'Baby', 'Lovely', etc. But what really get me is the 'MY' in front of it. Whoop whoop!
More often than not I use pet names for my own amusement; my little rose bud, my love plum, sweet cakes, sticky buns..whatever pops up in my twisted brain and makes me smile. But in relationship I usually say 'sweetheart, babe, lover, honey'.

@Venesian: Well more than anything, I am highly suspicious of "smooth talkers."

Petnames in relationships are ok. Well, petnames are ok unless your man is giving you the exact same name he gave his ex! lol

I was talking about when someone you're just dating and/or barely know feels the need to call you names and/or say things they don't really mean.

I did telemarketing back when I was in college & let me tell you, we were trained to use terms of endearment towards all the people we called. Doing so supposedly made each person we talked to feel like we were "1 of them" & not just some cheerful telemarketer. BUT, I can't tell you how many times I've had people cut me off mid-sentence & scream, "Don't call me honey or sweetheart!" Truth is, there are alot of people who don't appreciate pet names, especially if those names are coming from people that don't know them well.

I'm clearly not your "baby" if we just met last night. I'm clearly not your "sweetheart" if every other girl in your phone book is your "Sweetheart" too!

Idk, I just think dating/relationships run alot smoother when each person doesn't say anything that they don't mean. Don't try to sweet talk me just for the sake of hearing yourself talk & giving yourself brownie points for being/sounding so smooth. When you call me "baby" or any pet name, I wanna know that it's b/c you mean it & b/c there was some actual thought/creativity that went into it.

I get called "lovely" and I think that's real special, it's not by lovers either.

And If I really like someone I'll call them sweetheart but they are special to me because I don't call anyone that as it has a very special meaning.

Other than that I find it hilarious that my nickname is "G" and everyone says, Sup G or Awwwww G real gangster like...far cry rom my reality!

Idk pet names kind of remind me of highschool. When we were young, all the girls would literally faint with butterflies whenever any of the cute guys would call them any name other than their real name lol but see now, things are a little different.

As I get older, I realize that sweet talk w/o any meaning should be left to the naive & inexperienced high schoolers. I want someone to have a genuine conversation with me & call me by my real name. Sweet talk every here & now is cool (of course it spices up things & adds a little spunk) but just using words that have blank meanings aren't really appealing to me. But hey, if anything you say isn't coming from a geniune place period, I don't wanna hear it. And pet names aren't the exception.

My boyfriend calls me girly. It just happened. I am girly lol so it works. But sometimes he tries other words to find another one. I call him baby sometimes so he calls me babe back. Oh and every single night I get a goodnight. We stick to texting because I just want it that way. We think alike and can't find anything ever to talk about unless we're in person (kissing, our language lol 😉) so we never call. And my cellphone wasn't working a few nights ago so out of habit he had to call just to say goodnight. And what kind of ice cream I wanted for the next night since I was making dinner and asking for some 🙂 I think that's the best part about having a boyfriend, for me anyways. Does and brings me whatever I want lol it's too sweet.

Anyways, I have this tv ad stuck in my head and I'm looking all over youtube because it fits perfectly with this whole petname topic grrrrr!!!!

@Venusian: Well more than anything, I am highly suspicious of "smooth talkers."

So am I, if you know me, feel free to call me a pet name, if you don't I'll look at you like you've lobsters crawling out of your ears.
I wait tables, and all the sickly sweet 'hon', 'sweetie', etc. makes my skin crawl. It's fine for familiars, if you MEAN IT. But to say it to a random stranger? No. I would call a child 'sweetness, punkin', pudding', but not a grown person. I'm a sucker for little ones though.
