the light that once soaked my face was becoming thinner. i could tell because i was not as hot as i was when i had fallen asleep. night had taken my skin to another dimension of feeling, and charlie was like the earth mother of this new dimension, making animals out of my hand and letting them loose into the darkness of her apartment. i sat there for a few moments in silence. the microwave beeped.
turning over, i told charlie to light a candle. she curled up into a ball on the floor next to the couch, tilting her head back so i could see her eyes. they were so blue i was positive i could see clouds floating across them, each cloud in the shape of the animals she was making with my fingers.
"i want a kiss first."
her lips pursed like tiny red sunflowers growing toward all the light there was leftover in my face. unhugging her knees, she drew my head down in between her arms. her hair smelled like oranges.
