We used to have a purely hook up situation happening, but I feel like now it’s at least something more. I casually asked him how many other people he had slept with, and he kept laughing awkwardly and avoiding the question. My question is - do you think he was making the numbers up out of pride because he thinks I’m sleeping with other people too? Why would he be so reluctant to answer my question when he used to answer it so readily?

"a few" is not a number, though. He's tactfully answering your question because he probably thinks it's really none of your business. His answer will probably trigger your insecurity and judge him.
