Jodie Whittaker is the first female Doctor Who and will replace Peter Capaldi for series 11
It's official: Jodie Whittaker is the new star of Doctor Who.
Whittaker will make her first appearance as the first female Doctor this Christmas, in the closing moments of Peter Capaldi's final episode, before taking the controls of the TARDIS for the next full series of Doctor Who in 2018.
The announcement was made on the BBC following the men's singles final at Wimbledon, ending months of speculation about who would succeed Capaldi in one of TV's most iconic leading roles.
"I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet," Whittaker said. "It's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait."
Chris Chibnall, the show's new head writer and executive producer said:"After months of lists, conversations, auditions, recalls, and a lot of secret-keeping, we're excited to welcome Jodie Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor.
"I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The Thirteenth Doctor is on her way."
Whittaker's predecessor Peter Capaldi had his say too, calling the Broadchurch star "a wonderful actress of great individuality and charm."
"She has above all the huge heart to play this most special part," Capaldi said. "She's going to be a fantastic Doctor."
Capaldi announced his exit from the show in January 2017, with showrunner Steven Moffat confirming his own departure a year earlier.
Both will leave the show at Christmas in a special episode also featuring David Bradley as the First Doctor. Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall will be heading up the show from next year.
Chibnall is said to have a "five-year plan" for the series, revealing: "What the BBC was after [with the new era] was risk and boldness."

Though the BBC is yet to make an official announcement on the show's long-term future, a press release from BBC Worldwide and Shanghai Media Group (SMG) Pictures hinted that "series 12-15" are in the works, along with series 11.![]()
Mixed feelings really, I don't really care who plays what 🙂), but the thing is doctor who was known trough its history for having a male main actor, and suddenly changing that because of pressure , i really don't know.. From what i read it's because of pressure for feminism?if so, well done that's how you create gender equality by destroying male icons🙂)

Doctor Who is nothing but a crock of shit, which stopped being relevant in the '80s. The show can't even compete with the high standards of modern US television series.
As for there being a female Doctor Who, it's quite obvious the BBC is desperate... but not desperate enough to set aside the racism of the BBC's board of directors and go with a non-Caucasian Doctor Who (regardless of gender)...

Posted by MiZLeothey've been talking about it for like 10 years, really since the new series came out, that and having a ginger as a doctor.
Besides everyone is acting all shocked by the news when they have been talking about making the Doctor a woman for like a year now.
"I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we're thrilled to have secured our number one choice," Chibnall said. "Her audition for The Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The Thirteenth Doctor is on her way."Hmm maybe the writing will be better after all 😄
Chibnall is taking over from Steven Moffat after six years at the helm of the show. Moffat has been involved in the resurgence of both Doctor Who and another famed BBC series, Sherlock.click to expand

Posted by Godzillai understand the tradition of having him be male, it's really up for the british and bbc to decide so whatever they go with i'm fine with. the thing with spin offs is that it only happens when the show is popular, oh I miss torchwood. And as gob shite says it could be based on desperation (or desire) for ratings, check out this article from feb:Posted by rabidtalkerPosted by GodzillaThe writing needs improvement, not sure it matters if that is bad. I would have loved to have a female doctor who spin off so that they will eventually meet in episodes
They said the Scottish star faced being dumped by incoming show boss Chris Chibnall, who has been tasked with rescuing the series, which has seen ratings nearly HALVE.
....
Tackling the criticism, Moffat has said: “It’s a complicated issue. I never quite know how to respond.
“The general point being made by these people is correct. We need better female role models on screen.
“Maybe this is my dimwittery but I do not understand why Doctor Who, of all shows, is singled out as misogynistic. I’m sure I’m to the left of a lot of my detractors.”click to expand

Posted by ImpulsvThey'll go male partner as damsel in distress. They want to have some type of romantic tension between the leads and it's still a traditional kids show, I dont think they're not ready to start breaking gender roles yet, lol.
Well now maybe we can have a damsel in distress be played by a male that dynamic is going to be interesting. You think it's going to be a male or a female playing her partner

Next i want to see a transgender doctor 🙂) , just for the lolz 🙂)
