I'm currently pursuing an Arts Management career. Got a B.A. in Art History/Arts Management. And a number of great internships under my belt. I want to get into exhibition design, curating, publication... middle (wo)man stuff. I am also an artist myself. I work with a myriad of mediums that include painting, printing, photography, jewelry making, street art and graphic design. Yesss.
On the other hand, I'm fresh out of college & looking for jobs is the bunks. WHERE ARE THE JOBS AT YO!? hehe 🙂
I am currently interning PT at a Graffiti/street art gallery and couldn't be happier. I lurve it there.
i study film arts at art uni, i hope to achieve a degree in film arts by the end of it. i get slated for it and get asked stupid questions like "what kind of job is there when you finish?" to which i respond (or should respond) with, a job in brick laying. but i don't, i just give a lengthy answer explaining the ever lasting, never ending amount of jobs there are in the industry. not forgetting the obvious competitiveness and difficulty that inevitably comes with it.
@AA - that's awesome. you could consider look into getting an internship for some industry experience...it may also lead to a job after wards! i have two film friends that come to mind. one also has a degree in graphic design & does post-production for commercials at a successful ad agency. the other is a contractor - she works in production, so she's always running around doing different projects...music videos, commercials (she'll post on fb asking for someone with nun-chuck skills, lol) and just signed onto a feature film. good luck to you! 🙂
@TV - Ohh! What kind of medium do you use? And hey, I'm from Cali tooooo. what what.
yeah that's one of my assignements Kleo, to get work experience in the industry. it's bad but it's one of the things i don't pay any attention too, the financial part that is. i really couldn't give a shit tbh, in ten years time i'd just end up looking back thinking why i was so scared to take the risks? you only live once, and then you die.
Nice AA. That will be a wonderful experience for you. 🙂 I've had several internships... private galleries, non-profit arts, teaching, working under artists, and at a museum. I gained much more knowledge working in the field than I did in school.
I feel you... Finances, $ , commerce, waaaaaah. I've realized as I've aged and have become a wee more conservative that this is all but a part of the human condition. You are free to lead your life as you please, but to do some of the things that I want to do and contribute to the world - I need some cash flow.
I've been scrambling to look for a job in this economy and I've managed to get a few odd jobs like painting a mural. But I want something steady. It has not been this difficult to get a job before for me, even in the retail.
well that's the thing isn't it Kleo? cash is just an obstacle, nothing more nothing less, i'm gunna need cash when i finish to be able to buy mega expensive equipment i.e. cameras! and booking out stuff. which could mean getting a shitty retail job again which essentially is taking a few steps back which is annoying. And in your case like you said you need cash flow for all your mediums/tools and stuff so?
you said you got a BA hons degree in Art history and Art management? because me and my mate was discussing this not long ago about what kind of jobs one could apply for once achieved a dgree in Art history? the Art management sounds pretty obvious to me, bu i'm exactly sure what Art histroy involves exactly.
What's your story?
