So now, when he gets back I ask him "how was it?" or "was that a load off your mind?" or "gee, you look 10 kilo lighter!".....or something similar.

I work in the electrical engineering industry, a fitting phrase is "I'm just going to lay a cable, back soon"
Or the classic, "I'm off to give birth to a politician"

"Dropping the kids off at the pool" is another good one.
