How many of you consider acting a legitamate occupation?
I definitely do not.Anyone can act,we all 'act' in one way or another everyday.
People who idolize actors are shallow-period.
These bums are not portrayed as the people they are in reality.
They have publicity machines working 24/7 on their image.
I doubt if someone came across their celebrity crush in reality,if they weren't 'stars',were without makeup, without publicity, without the arrogance that has been instilled in these shallow people, they wouldn't look at them twice.
What's everyone's opinion on this?

I think acting is just an art form really,no different than music, painters, atheletes, fantasy writers, etc.I think they do thier jobs for that but when it gets down to it beyond that they don't do much thats true.I think docters, teachers, cops, grocery stores, etc.(basically the ones that are really needed and used by everyone)should be paid more:?

On the shallow stuff,I KNOW they wouldn't be viewed that way otherwise,my brothers a bassest but he doesn't have girls all over him for anything other than him as a person when hes not playing. There are some girls(groupies)involved with my brother but they don't actually "like" him,the "bass" is what they see as "sexy" meaning he's good with his hands is the "groupie talk" for bassest and guitarist. He knows it though so when hes single ya know he doesn't have a problem with it and will play thier game if he wants to but otherwise he likes good girls who he meets normally. They all started as nobodies too and noone cared except for friends,GF or BF's and family.

Actors are totally lazy compared to people who do physically demanding work like construction workers,or mentally demanding work like teaching, nursing etc.Yes,they have lines to learn, but that's hardly difficult & they have all the time they need to learn them-the film isn't going to roll if the bum...er..actor doesn't know their lines.
I see movies, sure, but they're all docos, something real world or educational that I can learn something from.
I saw your post on the golden globes & you come across as being rather star struck,to me.Wouldn't you rather give your attention & affection to someone in the general population, rather than drooling & fantacising over 'stars'?

I disagree that actors are 'lazy' bums. If I laid on my couch all day and did nothing, I doubt I can just roll out of bed and walk into a studio and grab a job as an actor.

Additionally, I can barely remember what I did yesterday, so I applaud those who can memorize 2 hours of dialogue. I thank the days that when I come to work, I don't need to worry if I'm over weight, my hair is messed up, I have blemishes on my face, that my latest relationship spat isn't all over the news, or everyone there knows I'm pregnant before I did.... Not to mention, my job is to be YOUR slave.. make YOU laugh, make YOU cry, make YOU scared.. entertain YOU until you're tired of me.. and then I'm out of a job.

A lot of hustling involed in becoming an actor and being an actor.. and MAYBE you'll be famous. Lucille Ball ate ketchup and crackers for dinner for months while she went to casting calls...and waiting for her lucky break.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with branh, entertainment is not the same contribution to society as an engineer.... and I think perhaps people pay too much money and attention to our means of entertainment (music, sports, movies, etc..) and NOT enough money or attention to engineers, teachers and scientists. However, the job itself takes it's on tole on the mind and the personal life.... and nothing close to laziness.

Also, do not confuse ACTOR with CELEBRITY. Linda Hamilton, Morgan Freeman, Brad Pitt, Denzel Washington, and Gene Hackman are ACTORS. The Gastineau women, Paris and Nikki Hilton, and the Gottis are CELEBRITIES... I'll definitely say celebrities are lazy.. and don't deserve most the attention given to them.

But celebs have been around since civilization has! The Greeks and Romans used to have idols that they'd eagerly go and see at their theatres and amphitheatres. The public audience are the main reason why these celebs get paid such gross(!) amounts of money. I' agree with STD that to be one of the top Hollywood actors is no easy feat and I'd say they have to be very disciplined and concentrated. Look at Renee Zellweger - an actress I admire quite a lot - she put on weight for Bridget Jones, lost it afterwards for her subsequent movies, and then had to put it back on again for Bridget Jones The Edge of Reason! Now she's back to being trim and lean again. Now that requires some effort to do even if you have loadsa money and fame. A lot of these celebs though go a bit wonky when the fame goes to their heads and then they're just donkeys but all the same I think they contribute a lot for the entertainment of us plebs!

And as for the more regular, less well known actors, why should they be lazier than anyone else? It's a job isn't it?

yeah, some people say christina aguilera is just 'a pretty face'(she doesn't even come close to pretty in my eyes). anyway, poeple don't seem to take her seriously because she's mainstream (or 'hollyweird' lmao!!!!) but from a professional point of view i've gotta say that she's a fantastic singer, in a league of only few, like whitney houston and mariah carey. whitney and miriah are soooo screwed up, though. total wrecks! what a waste of talent! it's really up to miss aguilera what road she'll take.

GL yeah I really typed "donkey". I just figured that it's understood now. donkey = a s s h o l e. Ee-aw ee-aw ee-aw. Donkey will probably be a banned word in a few years!

Current celebrity Ee-aws in my opinion: Britney Spears, Nicole Ritchie, Paris Hilton, Colin Farrell, Courtney Love, Melanie Griffith (her voice does my head in - she sounds like's just sucked up helium gas)

'a lot of hard work and perseverence'

so true!

becoming a good actor is a lot of hard work. it's physical things like gaining control over your body, i.e. facial expression, projection of the voice etc. then a bit of psychology, be able to relate to different kinds of people and situations, interact, do contextual studies. plus, have a pro attitude, get up early, work mad hours and still look good - or not good (lol), depending on the role they're playing... just like anyone else who wants to be good at their profession and achieve something.

'When is the times I need a good actor? Oh yeah, never.' lol good point!

i never said actors were as important as say doctors or teachers or scientists etc. but being a good actor still takes a lot of hard work!

primegen and branh0913, set up a camera and act out a scene. then watch it. it will look and sound pathetic, unless you're experienced actors and have gained the skill needed.

and yes, we need good actors just as much as we need good writers, good musicians, good dancers etc.

take books for example. branh, are you saying that we should burn all the books that don't contain scientific or practical information, because we don't need them? all books that contain stories and poems that express feelings, are they useless, because we might as well live without them? therefore writers who write such literature are useless, tooβ€”

primegen, i know what you mean. you must be exceptionally talented, have a lot more life-experience and confidence than the average person, though. there are people who've never studied or practised singing but when they open their mouths to sing you simply melt away. that doesn't mean that the average persong can sing like an angel without having to work hard and learn to.

what's your profession?

lol

how about this one:

the lion complains to the elephant that his sex life is becoming pretty dull lately. elephant says "go fcuk the desert mice over there and see what happens, that's real fun!".
the lion disappears and comes back after a while.
elephant: "how was it?"
lion: "pretty good, but nothing special, really!"
elephant: "oh, i guess they didn't explode like when i fcuk them, huh?"

a blond goes to the hairdresser and has headphones on. hairdresser asks "what haircut would you like?". the blond doesn't seem to hear her. hairdresser asks again - still no answer. hairdresser looses patience, pulls down the blond's headphones in a rage and screams "what haircut!!!" the blond?s face turns blue, she passes out and drops to the floor. the hairdresser picks up the headphones and hears "breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out, breathe in......"

GL,I'll post what I like,where I like & when I like.
As long as the mediators don't censor it,it's all good.
I think a post should be thought provoking & rock the boat a little.
Much better than sqwalking & bubbling about how some bum actor won a golden globe & how hot they are.
Branh, thankyou. You seem to get the idea.Well done.
People should be out there living their own lives, instead of watching bum actors pretend to live another fictional life.

Are you on welfare?
Just a bum actor? Hahaha...I,in fact,do contribute to society.
Yeah, maybe not thought provoking, but it got 120 odd posts, didn't it?
