Wish i had advise for you... but i really don't. You already know it takes Aquas some time to really let others in. it comes across very dismisive to the others feelings and standoffish. But its all defenses. Self preservation at it's finest.
Maybe let him know that if and when he's ready you are there for him, to just listen to what he is saying or not saying? That you respect that he isnt ready to share those feelings, yet. That part i CAN relate too, when saying he is hiding his feelings. It can be overwhelming, especially if its all new and wonderful feelings. Can feel like you are drowning. Feels are very hard for some Aquas. Sharing that part of ones self with another ,very hard for Scorpio placements ( this coming from my Rising) and with his moon.. man i can only imagine.

My moon is Virgo, but it is also in the 11th house. My emotions revolve around friends, social gatherings etc. They are the base of my emotions, what keeps me happy. However since my moon is in Virgo, emotions are not my forte, period. In fact, I hardly feel much at all. I would even describe myself as somewhat "robotic" (someone made a thread that described Virgo moon as that - I think it is fairly accurate in a non-depressing way- I find it to be very important to be rational, not emotional). I see people crying and I comprehend it, but I don't want to be around it. It's very discomforting and bothers me. If it is a close friend of course I try to comfort them, but I am not the best at it lol. I've said this so many times on so many threads but my best friend (Aries Sun/Cap moon/Sag rising) tells me I have a black soul and heart as a joke because of how standoffish and cold I act. When it comes to discussing emotions with someone I love, I tend to show them I care, not tell them. Even then I find it discomforting to discuss. I tend to be kind of flighty when pursued actually. I am not a huge fan of it. Maybe it's the Sag Mars in me. I am not Libra heavy but air is my 2nd dominant element. My top energies are: Scorp, Aqua, Aries. My top planets: Sun, Venus, Saturn.
My happiest relationships were with Aquas. We are still friends to this day. The worst was with a Virgo. He wanted to confine me to a little box. I think that experience was really what altered me but in a good way. I learned much from it. I succumbed to it because I was young and weak-minded. It taught me a very valuable lesson in how to not be in love. It gave me an innate desire to find someone who is wild and free and who dares to be different and who will allow me to be the same.
Given that, I have a deep care and love for my friends (and family). They are my life. That is where my heart lies. Though I am not a very emotional person (though it is in my being since I am a water sign and water dominant), I would do anything for my friends and for my family to show my devotion to them even if I do not display strong emotions outwardly as other water signs do.
