My divorced Mom and Dad were an Aries(m) and Gemini(d) couple. I don't remember my Dad being able to calm my Mom down. If anything his passivity and attempts at lightening the situation, enraged my Mom further. His resistance to reacting to her, led to her pushing harder and being more destructive. I think it's like standing up to a bully. You don't shrink and try to placate them. That will only make the bully see what more they can get away with. Things just got progressively worse.
