what is the difference between a natal chart and a transit chart?

I am guessing natal is the chart of what was happening in the sky when we were born and transits look at what is happening now? (at the time of drawing the chart)

but what different things can you tell from a transit chart that a natal chart can't tell you?

and what does a Solar Return chart tell us?

Actually it would be neat to get a mob of your disaffected yoofs and bring them out to spend a year or two on a station - a kind of modern day transportation. We could use second hand SIEVs from Indonesia to get that authentic "6 months in a leaky boat" atmosphere happening on the way out...knock the edges off them, what?
