Just a guess, but I'd say aspects to the ascendant add or colour the rising theme of how you come across and relate to others while 1st house placements would shape your ego and the core of who you are.

So, if 1st house placements shape the core of who you are, it'd be understandable that I relate more to that description. And, maybe how others perceive me would be more the Ascendant, so it wouldn't necessarily be FELT by me, as its an external representation of presence?
Based on my experiences that would be my take on this, yes.
I have a shit ton of aspects to the ascendent but a completly empty 1st house and it took me a very long time develop an ego and accept that there are things I want and desire, and that there is nothing wrong with that, while people always made characterizations and defintions of me that often felt like they were coming out of the blue for me.
Example: someone with a positive sun-ascendant aspect might be seen as somone with confidence or an air of authority but might not be aware of it or even interested in something like that, while someone with a sun in the 1st might have this picture of him/herself and thus a desire to project that to the outside and be seen like that. If the 1st house sun is also conjunct the ASC it would be more harmonious and easy-going whereas a 1st house sun might struggle with being as such.
Just an ad hoc theory though.click to expand

but what if you're a first houser but your sun is in the 12th?
Porbably more internal disconnect.click to expand
