It is imperfect, as are all other social theories to this day but the path to perfection is progressive and evolutionary.
There will always be people with hidden agenda, some of them will have the necessary resources to influence bigger decisions and more people. But we also have power and a total control is as impossible as is a perfect democratic state.
It's way easier to put the blame for our problems to some hidden forces tho. Makes us feel less respinsible.

And democracy can only evole as much as the people that implement it. Most people in western society are not ready, mentally and emotionally, for more freedoms. What we have achieved so far is tremendous and obviously we have to strive for more, but we shouldn't take such a radical position that is bound to be substantially wrong, imho. People were nit ready for ending segregation, but the judiciary branch - part of the government - imposed it. Same with gay marriages.
People today are benefitting from rights and liberties that were unimaginable not long ago. Infornation is flooding us and being ignorant is beicoming an individual choice we all make on a daily-basis.
As i said, it's way easier to blame the hidden ghost for something you are responsible to do yourself.
