Which aspect makes people lie to fit in?

So. I was wondering which aspect makes people lie to fit in socially, boost their ego etc.
Ive met like 2 people who lie to fit in, saying they dance a lot, play soccer like a pro, had their nipples pierced or w/e.

I dont think they just believe, else it wouldnt be a lie, ar least not for them.
