MoonArtist, you may be more random than I am. It's hard for me to admit it 😄

The Cancer is one of my (now ex) friend's boyfriend. He went to me and told me what this person was saying about me. Even though he didn't know me well enough, he told me the truth. I appreciate that immensely.

Cancer folks do have a strong sense of fair play.
More than they're given credit for.
He obviously felt that what was being said was not right.
I'm surprised he's not taking a second look at his girlfriend--if she is talking that way about her (now ex) friend, the thoughts are probably running through his head about what she's saying about him while he isn't around.

Maybe disloyal to their bond but they just started dating.

He wasn't my ex friend, he was my friend (they're both gay). He saw him talking shit about someone who he called a friend - me. Anyone would call into question their bf's/gf's character upon seeing that. I know I would.
