So there is some hot debate right now because some mom pierced her babies ears hours after being born. I have heard this debate before and I honestly do not know what the big deal is. Me and all of my sisters had our ears pierced when we were babies. I don't remember it. It wasn't traumatic. It didn't change who I am as a person.

I honestly don't wear earrings often because my ears and skin are sensitive but do I hate the fact that my ears have always been pierced? Not at all. Infact I have 2 piercings in both ears.

Some people are bringing up the fact that a baby cannot fight off infections so if the ears get infected, then what? Ok....out of millions of people who have had their babies ears pierced how often has that happened? And how is that any worse then when people circumcise their baby boys right after they are born? How often are those botched? How often do those get infected? Yet people don't have huge debates on whether or not you should do them.

Thoughts?

My mother pierced my sisters and my ears while we were still babies. I’m not sure if it’s a Hispanic tradition, but we always pierce the ears of the baby girls in my family. When I had my first daughter, my ex-husband did not allow me to pierce her ears. He told me that it should be a decision she makes on her own and not something I force upon her. I agreed with him because honestly, I didn’t care too much whether or not her ears were pierced, but my mother was bothered by our decision to not pierce her ears when she was a baby. As of today, my daughters are going on 8 and 11 and my oldest has since decided to have her ears pierced but my youngest has not.

I feel like a lot of this goes hand in hand with family traditions or belief systems, so I’m not for or against it. Almost every girl I know in my city had their ears pierced by their parents when they were just babies, it’s common here and not seen as harmful.

I'm Hispanic as well. I didn't know it was a Hispanic thing tho but I saw a lot of Hispanics in the debate I saw say the same thing so 🤷

I don’t really ever wear earrings though and I remember as a child my mom telling me if I don’t keep earrings in my ears that the holes would close up and I’d have to go get them pierced again and it would hurt. I have very sensitive skin as well though so it was always painful wearing earrings. Of course now my holes have closed up which kinda bummed me because it would be nice to wear a cute pair of earrings, but it’s not worth the pain and irritation. I know there are clip on ones, but those hurt my ears too. 🤦‍♀️

I was told the same thing. I think they have more earrings available for those with sensitive ears tho. I find 14k gold or higher I am fine with. Sterling silver as well and Nickle free earrings I can tolerate for short periods.

I have a new pair of 14k earrings I got a couple of months ago and I love them, I wear them everyday now even sleeping at night. I did take them out last night tho just to give me ears a break.

I have small ear lobs so the clip ons are usually to big for me.

I think piercing children's ears should be banned. Even when they ask for it. There are plenty of other, cheaper, transient and less invasive forms of hair and body adornments to make a girl feel pretty (feel, not look...all kids look pretty).

I've got mine pierced as a baby, according to tradition, and it was a very unnecessary palaver...

-Had to wear them day and night, so my holes won't close. I sleep sideways, so they dig into my skin.

-Couldn't change them too often, because gold is expensive

-Had painful "infections" each time I tried some fashionable earrings. In reality they were metal allergies.

-Some playmate attempted to steal one of my earrings

-Last but not least, was sometimes terribly afraid of having lost one of them and getting punished for that. Once I lost one in the shower and had to open up the drain by myself in a panic to find it.

Try ear climbers or ear cuffs

I think I was a toddler (maybe 2-3 years old) when my mom took me for ear piercing. She said it wasn’t a big deal, although she said I did cry 😬

It was customary for little girls, so my parents did it too. I still wear earrings, but I can only wear the real thing (precious metal such as gold and it has to be 14k gold or more), because I have contact dermatitis.

If I had a little girl, I would do it. I think it looks cute 🥰

Same has to be 14k or more. I can do silver and Nickle free as well but with the nickle I can only tolerate it for short periods. I have a pair of 14k earrings that I can wear 24/7.

I think people will argue about anything if given a subject.

WHO CARES— Is this really important?

I had learned one thing that if I agreed on my child tonsils removal at early age - she wouldnt suffer for 10 fucking days but I had not agreed because our family is keeping the tonsils! As a barrier to infections...I do not know if it is dumb or smart.

I know 1000 opinions can be given to that as well and NONE will be the 100% true. Have fun. This conversation is useless.

If you asked about clitoris's piercing - that would be a very smart post...ears - not really.

I've mentioned it before, but I knew a woman with two clit piercings and I think about 6 labia piercings. Fucking hell mate, regret deleting that number.

Does that make a difference for you as a guy having sex with her?

I was never brave to get anything else pierced. I got my belly button done twice but both times it got infected and I had to take them out. After that I was done with getting anything else pierced.

Yes, silver is okay too (most of the time) and so is white gold and platinum. And yes on the nickel free ones, they are okay for like one night out.

It sucks because I love jewelry!

It has to be real precious stones too. None of that imitation crap. And no 10 k gold. I have 18 k gold ring inherited from my grandma 💍

I have a ton of jewelry. I threw away a lot of my old crappy jewelery I got when I was younger and now only buy real stuff unless it's for a cosplay.

I did get a lot of jewelery from my grandmother as well recently but none of it is real its all costume jewelery but It's all nice and mostly necklaces and bracelets, very few earrings and no rings. I still have to go through it all, it's like bags and bags of it lol.

I got my ears pierced by choice when I was 12 but parents really don’t know any better and always opt for the gun piercings which don’t heal as well as needle piercings from a reputable tattoo parlor. All my needle piercings have healed better and give me less trouble over a decade later while the gun pierced holes have weird angles. A cousin tried copying me with additional ear piercings and got pierced at home and ended up getting infections -_- Parents should at least wait until the kids have a decent immune system and should only opt for professional needle piercing with surgical steel or titanium as the type of material. Reality is so little understand that cause of popular cutesy places like Claire’s with guns.

In the end it's bodily mutilation towards the child no matter how you spin it. You are stealing bodily autonomy for a reason that does not hold much like the useless reasons male genital mutilation ritual continues from the abrahamistic fools.

Risking infection in a newborn is straight stupid. I'm not even going to play nice about this.

Circumcise is actually painful. One of those things that are better young as possible...

The benifits greatly outweigh the down sides. Rarely have I heard of infections from circumcise. It's no different then managing the belly button.

Uncircumcised infections are very painful and common enough growing up to be a right of passage unfortunately.

That being said. 12 months plus is fine. It's about safety. Anyone who has a sick newborn with any infections and problems knows the struggle of trying to figure out what's bothering your child.

What do I think about parents piercing their babies ears….?

The same way I think about circumcising. It’s not a bad or good thing, I’m neutral and I don’t want to see anyone getting attacked for making the choice to circumcise or not. No explanation needed, I wouldn’t even consider having this discussion with another parent in the first place.

Every parent is entitled to go their own way with carrying cultural traditions, religious traditions or just personal preference.

And I just want to add that I firmly believe that no one should ever feel comfortable enough to approach anyone with a child that has pierced ears, as much as it’s socially unacceptable to ask someone if they circumcised their son or not. Just let it be.
