Well I actually like Real time Strategy. My favorite is Company of Heroes. If I had a second it'd probably be Halo Wars. But even then it wasn't all that great.
You should try Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader. It's a medieval-based game with various military units. The economy which you have to build is a little bit more complex though.
Sounds good man. Is it a open source game? Available on Steam? Or is it buyable?

Stronghold Cusader,Age of Empires liked all three,and the Civilization games were all right.
