Personally, if I care about someone...I will try to put the past aside to build that trust quickly. Is that a smart thing to do? Probably not. I can't hold a grudge and memories of dark events tend to fade for me as I'm always looking towards the sunnier side of things, and sometimes that means building trust that was once shattered.
Time and flattery. But, as you know, actions speak louder than words.

Too much flattery (it's a fine balance, you see 😛), someone who seems inclined to be deliberately hurtful/insensitive for no reason (damages the ego, and you know how much we hate that, especially in public), and the usual things that make someone distrust people: shady past, shifty demeanor, people whom we have observed to be what we perceive as untrustworthy through the way they treat others.
Yeah same...once somebody has lied about something serious enough, I will find it very difficult to trust that person again. Little white lies I can handle but a biggie? nah, you've pretty much lost my trust.
